I'm in the market for an HDMI extender over TCP/IP that also supports dolby digital surround.

There are a ton of products that extends HDMI using TCP/IP, but they all seem to downgrade the audio to PCM stereo. On the other hand, HDMI extenders over ethernet not using TCP/IP seem to be able to transmit the native audio signal too.

Is it an inevitable technical limitation that the audio signal be downgraded to PCM when it is transmitted in TCP/IP?
