OK, sorry if this is a silly question. My old DVD player died, so I replaced it with a new one that just so happens to have an HDMI output port (Sony DVP-NC800H/B). My TV (a Sharp Aquos) also has HDMI input, which I've never used, b/c I was routing the signal from the old DVD player through my B&K Reference 50 processor (which is lacking an HDMI port) via component video cables, and a digital coaxial cable for audio.

So, here I sit...it all works great hooked up exactly as it was before, but I have this empty HDMI port on the DVD player and TV. What happens if I connect them via HDMI cable, but continue to run the audio (or try) through the coaxial cable and processor?

1) Will the HDMI take precedence, and I only hear audio coming out of my TV?

2) Will I hear audio out of my TV from the HDMI cable, and out of the speakers from the coaxial signal from the Ref50?

3) Will the whole thing explode in a shower of fiery sparks?

4) Will I hear nothing?

5) And finally, is it worth me thinking about this? What level of quality difference will I see? The DVD upconverts to 1080p via the HDMI port. I have no BluRay player, so that's a nonstarter right now for me.

Thanks!

Sorry to sound like a jerk but if you have a HDMI cable, just try it. I guarantee it will not explode into a shower of fiery sparks and you'll be able to answer all those questions.

if you don't have a HDMI cable, they are very inexpensive.

Or if you want to buy locally, check Big Lots if you have one close by. The cable is about $10-12. If it doesn't do what you want or hoped, just take it back.

1. I am not sure what you mean, and your DVD player matters. Some (most?) players might be able to send audio to the receiver via optical and video vs. HDMI. If that's true, you can probably do what I think you want to do. You pretty much need to read your manual, and/or try it out (you might need to change settings on the player.)

2. See #1. This comes down to player implementation, and settings.

3. No. But just in case, turn on a recording device; if it DOES blow up in a cool way - you tube, and post the link

4. See #1 - Read the manual, make the proper setting changes, and you should get sound, though maybe not to the TV

5. See the AVR FAQ and other online resources for why you might want HDMI

i used to have a sharp lcd a while back and the way i would hook this up is:

DVD >-hdmi-> TV >-optical-> Receiver

so the tv actually converts from HDMI to optical audio. then you can run the TV in center mode (in the menu) so the TV only played the center channel and the receiver got to process everything else. the recever did get the center signal as well, so you could just not use the tv speakers as they are prolly inferior to standalone center speakers.

Generally when you connect your system as you did and send optical out from the TV to the receiver, the TV converts all the digital signals to 2 channel PCM. So if you're DVD player was originally sending out dolby 5.1 or DTS via HDMI, it gets converted to 2 channel stereo by the TV.

Now your TV may be different but the Sony, Panasonic and Samsung flat panels I've come into contact with all convert external sources to 2 channel audio when outputing thru the optical out.

Forgive me if I am confused, but I thought the OP was trying to run HDMI to the TV, and digital audio to his processor.

Some of the posts assume he's trying to run audio FROM his TV.

My answers would have been different if that had been the case.

Sorry to disappoint, but there were no explosions, and it all worked great! When I first hooked it up the TV image was fuzzy and shaky, but I went into the DVD player setup and changed it from autodetect to 1080 and it cleared right up! Looks much better than it did through the component, and now I can listen to the audio through either my TV or through my processor (via the digital cable)!

Now I have to run the cable through the floor/basement along with the rest of them, and hope my 2 year old doesn't chew it in half while I'm at work tomorrow!

Thanks to all for your help!
