i bought a 46' sharp aquos LC-46D85U along with a Pioneer HTZ 580 DV surround sound.

the pioneer only comes with a dvd player and one optical input for surround, i informed them be for i purchased i needed a system that handled everything correctly, after being told the pioneer would do the job, i purchased.

after getting it home my brother said it wasnt any good, you need optical inputs to get true sound from my devices. yet, when i tried to return it, the guys at futureshop told me i can run everything into my TVs five HDMI and cable back to the receiver and still get the sound im looking for. My brother told me futureshop it trying to shut me up, and that i need several optical inputs to get what im looking for.

im going to be hooking up the following:

HD cable

Blu-ray

Ps3 and xbox360.

ideally what should i do in this circumstance???

thanks fellers.

Just an FYI, Future Shop tried to pull the same thing with me. I originally purchased a Samsung HTiB that had no HDMI inputs, only one HDMI out, but had an optical input.

"Just plug all of your HDMI cables into your T.V., and run your T.V.'s Optical Out to the receiver. Then what ever input your TV is on, the amp will play perfectly without having to switch inputs on two devices..."

Everything sounded great (not with my system, I meant what they told me), untill I got my PS3 and Rogers HD PVR hooked up.

Turns out my 32" Samsung LCD T.V. only outputs stereo audio out of the Optical Out??? WTF good is that for!?!?

I took my system back and got the Samsung HT-AS720 and now everything works perfectly.

I am running five HDMI devices and have a 3x1 HDMI auto switch that makes everything work beautiful with the AS720 receiver.

Most that have ATSC and/or QAM tuners output 5.1 from them (for use with Dolby Digital 5.1 on HD channels) and downmix to stereo everything else.

A select few can output 5.1 over optical from HDMI sources. Don't ask me which models, though.

Unless you know for sure, I'd avoid routing audio through the TV and out its optical. It's almost always better to go direct to the receiver.

ok.

i set up the surround sound....i think its working....i dont have my blu-ray or my HDTV set up yet but from the sounds of my xbox360 it im getting 5.1.

i guess the problem is that my ear isnt familiar with 5.1 and how it should sound.

i hope that clown salesmen wasnt banking on that.

im not sure i have the right set up, but it seems to be working.... is there a latency problem with the sound if i dont go optimal? or what will be lacking?

thanks guys.

The main problem with not feeding a true 5.1 signal is that the receiver has to use something like Dolby ProLogicII to get a matrixed 5.1. You'll get sound out of the speakers, but most agree discrete 5.1 sounds better.

i just ran a dolby surround dvd to hear the system, the 2 back surround speakers sounded like they were both playing at the same time

i guess this is what i was dreading.....that salesman double crossed me.

well, i guess i will return it and get a different system....

any recommendations on a good 5.1 surround that has at least 400w and 3 optical inputs and hovers around the 400 range?

my tv specs are listed above.

thanks! very helpful!
