I have a five year old Toshiba that the HDMI out from my laptop to TV works immediately with sound. However, a brand new Samsung only the video outputs. What could be the issue?

Right click the volume icon in the taskbar and select Playback Devices. Then select your video card/hdmi output and hit Set Default.
