HDMI Question...Help would be appreciated!

Hello all,

I'm sort of new to these forums, so please be kind. Ok so on to the question:

So I just bought the Sony DVD Dream System DAV-FX500. It works great, I have just the regular hdmi cable plugged in from the output on the dvd player/reciever to my HDTV. The question is, with only one hdmi output (which states clearly below the hdmi out on the player/reciever "DVD ONLY") on the player/reciever, is it possible to get the hdmi sound and video from an outside source (IE the playstation 3 that's coming out, with an HDMI out on the back) to play through the player/reciever's speakers, and display on the tv?

So i guess what i'm asking is, is it possible to use that system like a normal reciever, and get an outside hdmi source to connect to that player/reciever and utilize the hdmi feature with an outside hdmi source?

Sorry if i'm scrambled and confused....But does this make sense to anyone?

You'd need to hook the extra device such as a PS3 directly to the TV via HDMI or component for video then attach the optical/coax out from the device to the DAV-FX500 for sound. There is no way to attach a device via HDMI directly to the DAV-FX500.
Depending on the fact that the PS3 has an optical out right? In that case, I could plug the HDMI from the PS3 into the tv, then the optical cable out from the PS3 into the DAV-FX500? I know that's probably what you just said...but i'm kinda dim... :)

How does optical audio, compare to HDMI audio?

That would be correct, I'd assume it would have something because of the limited number of HDMI equipped AV receivers on the market.

For Dolby Digital, there is no real difference between the two, just two different ways of carrying the data.
Thank you so much for your help! You've made me a happier person, for having purchased the DAV-FX500! Now I can enjoy my upconverted dvds in surround sound, and eventually my PS3 at the best audio/video quality! Thanks again!
Oh crap...I just checked the specs (not at home) on the DAV-FX500, and it doesn't have optical audio!!! Crap! Any suggestions?
Per the picture I saw on crutchfield, it has both an optical and coax input available. The Key features on the Sonystyle site state the same.
Hmm...I do seem to remember seeing the optical while looking for the HDMI....I'll have to check when I get home...
