HDMI to Coax? In Wall Coax run

450 Views 5 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  mjones73
I recently built a new house and had a prewire done for my flat screen above my fireplace. the pre-wire consists of 6 coax cables and one data cable that run to a wall plate a few feet away that can be hooked up to my components.

My question is how to do i hook up HDMI to the coax? Are there special adapters?

My TV has Two HDMI outputs (with seperate audio if necessary), RGB with Audio, Analog HD x 2, AV x 2, and SVideo x 2.

I do not have any components yet that supply HD signal (Direct TV or DVD) but I wanted to go ahead and use the HDMI connections for when I do purchase the HD components.

So I'm guessing I have to run HDMI cable to a coax adapter, and then from the coax wall plate run another coax into an adapter that fits AV or SVideo?

Can a coax cable carry the Left / Right Audio? Are there adapters for L/R audio to coax?

Your help is sincerely appreciated

You can't convert HDMI to coax, you should have had two HDMI cables added to the pre-wiring. Your only option to carry HD over coax is component and that's going to use 5 of your 6 cables (3 for video, 2 for audio) and you'll probably need a switch so you can hook up multiple sources to it and switch to the one you want to view on the TV.

Also, composite (single yellow connector) and s-video can not support HD, only component, DVI, HDMI and RGB can.

As for the flat panel over the fireplace, hope your not sitting too low, your TV should be mounted with the center at eye level, having it high can cause neck strain issues with any extended viewing. You should probably tilt it down a bit if possible when you mount it.
So essentially if the only "digital" hook up to my TV is HDMI then I have to some how fish Two HDMI hook ups through the wall (they did not install a conduit)? Is there a bare wire situation that I can then attach to an adapter?

Oh I forgot to mention there is a "data" cable also (CAT5) I believe. Can this be used as the transfer cable for the digital signal?

Yes

What do you mean by bare wire situation?

Gefen makes an HDMI over Cat 5 device but it requires two Cat 5 cables and you only have one.

Bare Wire - HDMI wire to run and then connect to it using adapters (like bare coax)

and then what is the device like from GEFEN. I could probaly fish another cat5 line farely easy.. it's only about 6 feet from the box behind the tv to the box next to the fireplace where the components are.
1) Not really

2) http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=2225 , it's $350, I'd rather figure out how to fish the HDMI cables instead personally...
