HDMI to DVI conversion

There seem to be plenty of cables out there that convert HDMI to DVI (and vice versa). Are there any video artificts or problems known with these types of cables?

In theory, there should not be any issues however I have heard some rumors.

You might want to check out this thread. There seems to be a possibility of issues with black levels depending on going from DVI>HDMI or HMDI>DVI.

I had black issues when I used a HDMI->DVI cable between my HD DirecTV TiVo (HR10-250) and my TV (Samsung 4674).

I had planned on using the Sammy's DVI input for the TiVo and the HDMI input for a soon-to-be-purchased upscaling DVD player. So, I will either use component for the TiVo or get a HDMI switcher.

That is fine if you have dual inputs, but my Samsung HLN DLP only has a DVI input. In theory, this should be compatable but I has have heard of black level issues such as noted above.
Wait. Lemme see if I understand. My DVD Players Outputs HDMI and I convert to my TV's DVI-In. So I may be missing black shades from 0-7??? So what will the shades 0-7 appear as?

Black. Instead of being shades, they will all be the exact same black.

The issue is not with the cable, it is an issue with the standards implemented in the video processors (encoder -> decoder.) Sammy's implement the computer scale standard not the film industry. Simply put, to a computer, black is black, but the people in the film industry needed a blacker than black.
