I am trying to hook up my laptop to my tv with my hdmi cable and it works, but only for about 5 minutes. My tv screen then goes to static and then blue. Any help is much appreciated.

What resolution are your trying to use for the TV? What type of HDMI cable are you using (high speed?)? I'm betting that you don't know what type of HDMI cable you have and you're running at 1080p / 60. If so, you may have a bad cable (or at least the wrong type).
BTW, there are only two types of HDMI cables (with a number of options for each type). They are "standard speed" and "high speed", sometimes referred to as Cat 1 and Cat 2.
