HDMI TV for HD-DVD??

443 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  TheSkeptiks
Hello,

I'm a bit confused on the whole HDMI port for TV's to get full HD-DVD resolution. I currently own a KF60XBR800 and I was looking at the spec's and it does not seem to support HDMI. Does this mean that I would need to purchase a whole new TV with HDMI to support the HD resolutions on the new HD-DVD, assuming all the speculation is true regarding the new HD-DVD players and support HDMI only. Will there be a cheaper resolution to this? If not can anyone suggest a 60" TV currently like my XBR with HDMI support in the $5000.00 price range?

Thanks,

-Randy

I don't see why HD-DVD players wouldn't be able to output their signals via component like many STB's do. I get great 1080i output of my Comcast STB this way. Of course I could be wrong about this and they might not allow it for "copyright" reasons...
Halo0,

Right, from what I've read regular compnent cables will only allow HD-DVD to work in 480p resolution. They said that HDMI would be the only way to get 720p and above resolutions because they are trying to close the analog hole for piracy reasons or something like that. Really I'm just looking for a solution, and what it boils down to is am I going to have to purchase a new TV?

Thanks,

Does your tv have a DVI input? You could use that.
Skep,

Yea I have a DVI input. So this is just a cable thing not a port problem? I can get an HDMI cable and hook up the new DVD player to that via the DVI port and it will be fine?

Thanks,

Randy
I have a feeling that HD-DVD players will have both HDMI and DVI as an option. I might be wrong. I'm assuming.

If the HD-DVD players ONLY have HDMI then you can get a cable that has DVI on one end and HDMI on the other OR you can buy an HDMI adapter for the DVI cable.

DVI out of your TV into the HDMI adapter which is connected to the HD-DVD player.

I think you'll be fine because DVI and HDMI are basically the same thing. Just no audio through DVI.

BUT, I hope your DVI is HDCP equipped (HDCP=Copy protection).

If not, then you might be screwed. I'm sure it has HDCP though.
