lol we're talking about Comcast of Union here...the ones that haven't added any new national HD channels since October of 2007. Yes, 2007.
I just happened to be scrolling through HDNet's movies for this weekend and found to my delight that they're showing Local Hero today at noon and again on 1/8. The film depicts a culture clash between a young American oil executive and the inhabitants of a remote Scottish town. Excellent performances all around with a particularly enchanting star turn by Burt Lancaster as the space-obsessed head of the oil company.

This movie remains on my top-ten list after some twenty-five years, with its wonderfully witty script, lovely score, and remarkable scenery. Even though I own the DVD, I'm still recording the HD version today.

That one has popped up a few times over the last year. Good stuff, though.

I'm kind of pumped over the director's cut version of Robocop.
I gotta work WEd. night

Thank GOd for DVRs to catch Yonkers Joe

This is absolutely my favorite film of all time.

However, the version HDNet Movies has to show has a few issues with background music that must have come directly in the master from Warner Brothers and must have been errors made when producing a stereo/surround master from the original film's mono soundtrack.

Namely, there are at least three important scenes in which the background music fades away and can either not be heard at all or just barely. Someone seeing the film for the first or even fifth time might not notice, but I'm at viewing #110 or so.

1) When Mac and Danny are driving along and hit the rabbit.

2) When Danny tells Marina about the plans for the oil terminal (on the beach outside the ceilidh.) You can hear the background music for a bit and then its as if someone turned the volume down to zero - their speech and the sound effects are the proper level.

3) When Mac tells Gordon he wants his life and that he'd "make a good Gordon, Gordon."

The background music is essential for these scenes, especially #2 above, where it makes the scene that much more poignant.

I don't think it's an error at DISH or at HDNet Movies, so that leaves Warner Brothers; there are also noticeable audio "pops" at edits in a few places that aren't present on the DVD, LaserDisc or VHS (or old HBO showings.)

The film was a budget film so doesn't really have HD "pop" though it does look quite noticeably better than the DVD, and the soundtrack is much, much better than the mono DVD, which sounds muffled by comparison.

I just thank HDNet Movies for the opportunity to see it at all this way, as I suspect the odds of it ever making it to Blu-ray are near zero.

Not mentioned in the main article was that HDNet premiered six "Friday the 13th" movies (from "Part 3" to "Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan") this past Jan. 2nd and 3rd from 9PM on. You can bet HDNet will repeat these around the time the new "Friday the 13th" theatrical movie is released.

Watched them all. "Part 3" looked horrendous. It's obvious Paramount used a dirty, damaged 2nd generation print used for 3D effects back when it was released theatrically (no 3D effect whatsoever in this HD version) without an ounce of effort in restoring it. The movie is total s*** though, so it gets the HD transfer it deserves. "The Final Chapter" looked soft (lots of dark shots with grainy dark portions) but it matches the mood of the flick, with is nasty and 100% grindhouse. "Part V: A New Beginning" looks fantastic and it's the best-looking of the six "Friday the 13th" HDNet showed over the weekend. Blood splatters practically pop up with crimson-deep reds and most distance and close-ups have sharp detail. The movie is total s*** but the transfer is above-average.

"Part 6: Jason Lives" and "Part VII: The New Blood" are very similar in that both movies only shine in high-def when there's a close-up of a character's face or object. Medium shots and long distance shots look only average. There's a scene in "The New Blood" when Jason is in the basement of the house with his mask removed. I've seen this movie on VHS and cable TV over the years and it looked particularly soft and drained of color and detail, but the close-up of Jason's monstruously deformed face is an HD standout moment. "Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan" is similar to parts 6 and 7 but it's a little more detailed than both of them (we're talking a smudgen of extra sharpness and pop in the colors). I was able to read the Times Square news ticker at the end of the movie when the credits start rolling (Oliver North was convicted of 3 of 12 charges against him on Iran Contra on the night the crew was filming) which I wasn't able to do when I saw the movie on cable a few years back.

Paramount has been notoriously careless with the visual/aural presentation of these horror movies as if they're ashamed to have made so much money off of them during the 80's slasher craze. These HDNet movie transfers is the best these movies have ever looked, but that only makes them adequate by high-definition (and AVS Forum members) standards.

Just finished watching The Enforcer on HDNet Movies. I hadn't intended to, but I was surfing by and saw it had just started (well, right before Callahan meets Tyne Daly's character officially as his partner) and I just had to stop. The print looked absolutely pristine, with colors that popped. Fantastic presentation. Of course many aspects of the movie seem dated now, but I still enjoyed watching it. Good stuff.

This is what makes HDNet movies worth the extra few bucks a month to me. These movies that can not be seen anywhere else. Whether it's a horror movie like "Splinter" or an off beat dramedy like "Special". I really look forward to "Yonkers Joe". I hope HDNet continues this tradition.
Comcast in Houston just removed HDNet Movies from their channel line up as of 12/31/08

I DVRed all the Friday the 13th movies when they were on... I did notice a progression of better appearance as the movies got more recent, as I expected of course.

Curious why no 1,2 or 9,X... I guess since the iconic "Jason" started with #3 (he was in #2 but no hockey mask until #3) that makes sense... still, would be nice to get the whole set from HDNet as they do top notch work in their HD airings.

Meanwhile... I keep hoping to see High Plains Drifter sometime on HDNet. One of my favorite Eastwood oldies.
Wrestling Ernest Hemingway!!!! Will HDNET ever get this movie!!!!!!!!!!

The first "Friday" movie is coming out on Blu-ray. No idea about number 2, but from 3 to 8 they're probably a pretty cheap package of old Paramount catalogue titles. "Jason Goes To Hell," "Jason X" and "Jason Vs. Freddy" are New Line Cinema properties, not the old "Friday the 13th" movies (those were owned by Paramount). Different (more expensive?) contract for both movie packages.
So why was the Original Airplane on the HDNET Movie Schedule for 3:30pm EST on 1/1/2009 for several weeks - only to be yanked off and replaced with Airplane 2 in the 5pm hour?

I like to pretend 9 never happened

I am a huge Friday fan and I hate 9 with a passion. Turning Jason into a stupid parasite was beyond absurd, even for a Friday movie

I got to see 6 and 7 on HDNET (though I was flipping back and forth to the Colts/Bolts game). PQ was good enough. I wasn't expecting much since Paramount treats these movies like a Red Headed Stepchild. Sad I missed 4, as it is by far the best in the Franchise, and everytime I watch I get to hope that maybe this time, Corey Feldman will get a machette through the eye ... so far it has never happened though

Seeing the trailers for the remake has stoked some interest for me again. I was against it at first, but it doesn't look too bad. Just hoping it is better than the last few movies. A big positive is they didn't cast Kane Hodder who completely destroyed the character, though I have to admit Jason X is a guilty pleasure of mine, and it has the best kill in the series (the girl who's face in pushed in liqiud nitrogen, and then slammed off the table)

I would put Local Hero on one of my least favorite movie lists. It was so bad and bland that I can't even remember the last half of it or why I was supposed to care about a single character. I just refreshed myself with the Wikipedia entry and it was just as boring to read, but thankfully hours shorter.

Unfortunately I missed Splinter and Special, but I won't forget about Yonker's Joe. It's too bad they only show these special "previews" once or this wouldn't be an issue.
