HDNET NHL Hockey: 1/20/04--Rangers game not blacked out in NYC area???

386 Views 19 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  jaypb
Just happened to flip by HDNET (via D*) and noticed the Rangers were playing. In weeks past when the Devils and Isles were on I could've sworn tha the games were "blacked out" in my area.....which falls under the NYC "umbrella". Not so tonight......any reason why???

Not that I'm complaining.....just found it.....odd

I would have expected it to be blacked out, as they have been in the past when they played in LA on December 30th.

I didn't check out HDNet, since I had the game on MSG-HD, but I should have to see the difference in quality...damn! I was too worried about the Rangers blowing another one to realize.

Did you happen to notice if the announcers were Sam and JD?

I had just gotten home and sat down to eat dinner so I didn't stick with the game for more than 30 seconds. I was surprised to see it not blacked out and then my wife chimed in that "she didn't want to watch Hockey"....and my kids started screaming........so I escaped into "Strange Brew" on HDNETmovies...........

Sorry

According to Jaypb, the live feed was not blacked out. Not sure why. I was going to see if the HDNet feed from the replay was the same as the MSG-HD feed, as best as I could remember. Angles seemed the same, but there were more close-up shots on HDNet in the corners that I don't remember from MSG tonight.
I was hoping that others from Boston area (???) who would've probably also been blacked out would chime in and say if it was/wasn't blacked out....or even others from the NYC area. I was going to start this thread in the locals area, but I figured a "bigger" D* audience would look here instead of locals area for an HDNET presentation issue/question.

Sorry
You can't fool me.......................you hate hockey!!! ;)
I'm in NW Connecticut and my home RSN is deemed to be NESN(even tho I get most Ranger games/NY sports too) and it was not blacked out for me. Neither was the December game in LA. Actually none of the the games on HDNet have been blacked out for me, including Bruins games.

Oddly though, I could've SWORN I noticed blackouts for Devils games and IIRC Islanders as well over the last 2 months or so.

I'll preface it all by saying I'm not a hockey fan per se. But I'm all for non blackouts of HDNET sports events....especially if I can't pick up the sports event locally on my RSN.

I've only had HD since early December, so I dunno about October or November games.

Could it have something to do with the Devils and Islanders usually being broadcast on Fox Sports Net? While this is a regional sports network, some people have to pay for it (like Comcast customers). The Rangers are on MSG, and local cable companies offer it included in the "preferred" basic cable tier. Just a thought.
Don't know about Comcast or TimeWarner, but Cablevision, owner of MSG network, started charging customers, on the basic tier, an extra fee for MSG, last year.

Can I ask how much extra they are charging?
I'm north of Boston, this wasn't blacked out for me. I had on HDNet right when the game started and to my surprise noticed it wasn't blaced out.

There was a game in Boston earlier in the season where the live game was blacked out and I remember watching the replay at 11PM the same night just to see a game from the Fleet Ctr (the game was right before xmas IIRC).

This was a nice surprise, I didn't want to post last night during the game, I was waiting for D* to catch on. I wonder if this was a one-time screwup?

Thanks for confirming things from up in your neck of the woods. I too was wondering if it was a programming error....I'll have to check hdnet's website to see when the next Islanders/Devils/Rangers game is slated to be aired.

I think the Devils and Philly are playing the beginning of Feb.
The Bruins have 2 home games on early Feb, one on Super Bowl Sunday at 1:00. If nobody checks before then that is when we'll find out.

I'd think if these games start to not be blacked out people would start talking it up. My money is that this was a mistake on D*'s part...
