Kerr cook, administrator of sonyhdvinfo.com is getting a HDR-FX1 from Sony to test all weekend. He has made a public request for us to make suggestions on what we want him to try. I suggest if there is anything you need to know, go to the direct link below and post your requests to him. Kerr has had an issue on how to get the HD footage into his PC. But CineForm might have helped here. Though if have other ways, pass them on to him. What we really need is raw HD files so we can play them back with the VLC player etc. Kerr Cook said he will give us testing updates through out the weekend.

For Japan it's already released. Everywhere else is slated for November according to Sony. No official date although some websites are claiming 11/8.

It's been available in Japan since the 16th (about a week). If you want a Japanese version you can order it from here . A site recommended by Sony Japan.

Cost is $399,000 JPN which is about $3714.39 USD at the current exchange rate.

This is the url for Sony's recommend sellers in Japan. Click here.

WOW. That sounds great. How can I exchange my $3714.39 for $399,000? I'd like to do it several times. :D;)

You can use VLC player, WinDVD 4.0 or higher or if you have a HDTV card in your PC, you can change the exension to .ts and it should play them back fine.

VLC can be gotten here .

Hi Troy,

Thanks for the link. I have two of the files, but they won't play in the latest VLC (version 0.7.2). I tried both the m2t and ts extensions. Have you been successful playing the clips? I believe that, unlike the JVC camcorder, the FX1 doesn't make transport stream MPEG files.

Troy, thanks.

David:

I downloaded the Beta version 8.0 from the VLC site and it worked fine. I could not install the version 0.7.2 because a got a system error.

The FX1 looks good!

I use WinDVD to play back the M2T files with no problems. The FX1 does indeed make MPEG2-TS files as noted by the file extension on the clips.

I couldn't get the files to play on my office PC, but was successful on my home PC with it's HDTV tuner card. I had thought that VLC was self sufficient, but it apparently needs some other HDTV product installed.

Note: both PC's run Win2000.

Sergio:

An alternative to 'installing' VLC is to just get the zip file and extract to a directory. VLC can be run from that directory so maintaining the program is much easier.

I ordered one from B&H Photo Video yesterday; shipping it UPS ground since I'm both cheap and paranoid about cosmic ray CCD damage from airfreight, so I'll get it mid next week. The samples I've seen look pretty good, standard Sony for better and worse. My question is how to suck the m2t files off the FW onto my Mac? VirtualDVHS or what? Anyone got the skinny yet?
