HDTV Camcorders?

I haven't seen any yet except for the Sony HDCAM but when do we expect HDTV prosumer camcorders will become available? Some current camcorders from both Cannon and Sony offer progressive scan CCD's but this is more for recording a succession of still photographs onto tape.

I've looked around quite a bit for this. You can get an HD cam for $50k to $60k, or even more. I would now settle for a cam with 3 16 X 9 CCD's, with the quality of 480p DVD's. From what I've seen, for under $10k you can only find 4 X 3 aspect ratio CCD's - Examples are the Canon XL1 and the JVC GY-DV500U. There seems to be a big gap between prosumer and professional. Also, it is annoying to try and compare prices for these cams, since the web retailers don't readily display the prices for the ones we want the most.

Here's my wish list: A full size 480p cam with 3 1/2 or 1/3 inch widescrean CCD's; a relatively high quality cam for less then $7k (I could be persuaded to pay a little more). Now, is this too much to ask? If anyone knows where I can buy this let me know.

I like this one but it's around $12k:

Will High Def cams go down in price fast?

Talk to you later

Remember to write letters to channels that have HDTV thanking them, and to channels that should have HDTV requesting it. For example, ESPN, Fox Sports Net, Discovery channel and the NASA channel.

Dave,

I asked this very question of a JVC rep at this year's CES. (He was the person demo'ing the HD VCR, so I assumed he'd be knowledgable about HD camcorders.)

He told me there would be a HD JVC 720p camcorder that I could "hold in the palm of my hand" by next year's CES. No word on price, though.

Best,

Pat

There is a Panasoncic DVC-Pro HD camera. I don't know the model number.
