This probably belongs in a separate forum, but HDTV camcorders are part of the HDTV recorders thread for some reason I don't understand.

I am curious,

What kind of picture and sound do you get if you use an HDTV camcorder to record an HDTV show that was playing on an HDTV monitor with Dolby Sound?

Do you lose a lot in the translation?

Suppose you wanted to create a scene using some existing HDTV movie as a background. Could you put a high definition monitor in a box with the camcorder, and put a ball in front of the monitor, and make it look like the ball is part of the original movie?

I've asked about that myself. I think it would work, but only with a display like an LCD or plasma that does not have a refresh interval and thus does not flicker or scan. Thus you don't have to have a genlock or video sync control.

On the good side, as long as your camera can focus that close it doesn't seem you would need a large display. Just something like a 17" LCD computer monitor might work.
