I am using DirecTv as my primary source, feeding a Mits 73907. Many of the channels have poor image quality and I was thinking of using an external doubler to improve image quality of the non HD Channels.

I am confused about where/how to install the doubler with an HDTV receiver.

Actually a line doubler probably isn't going to help you much. The channels that don't look good are still being received in HD I believe, they just where not create in HD. The broadcaster has used some box to upconvert the video to HD. I get this a lot of this as well. If the original video was bad or the upconverter was not very good then the damage has been done and there isn't much you can do it fix it.
