Thanks videobruce.  I looked at the list.  I can eliminate the first one, Brite-View/Zinwell.  From personal experience I can confirm that it is a piece of junk.  I'll look into the others to see if one of them fits my needs.

You do realize it's quite easy to connect your computer to your TV or use an extender or XBMC client and use a normal IR remote to control it like you do today. It's much cheaper than Tivo and far better than other standalone recorders that have no guide, no ability to record copy protected channels, no multi-room capability, no remote streaming and have only a few tuners.

What outputs do you need? When you say "TV" do you mean channel 3 or 4 RF or does your TV have line inputs(composite, HDMI, etc.)?

If your looking for something that just works then the most expensive option(a Tivo) is probably your best bet, a less expensive option but less flexable and potentially more "issues" would be a CM+ DVR(but it only has HDMI output), from your description I would not suggest something like a iView or Homeworx DVR, they are very inexpensive and have many different outputs including RF but more of a hobby than a set and forget it device. You also didn't mention if you were OTA or cable, something like the CM+ only works from an antenna.


My setup is very simple.  I receive tv signals through a digital antenna, which is cabled to my digital tv.  So, I am looking for a recorder to put inline to record shows for playback later on the tv.

I have looked at the links.  Being limited in my knowledge of electronics, I find a lot of the information goes right over my head.  In the case of the Magnavox and Phillips units, I did not understand most of the negative comments, but got the feeling that neither is what I should buy.  On the other hand, I got just enough out of the comments on the ChannelMaster to conclude that it would work, but needs an external hard drive for doing any significant amount of recording.  The days of analog were simple.  By a VCR and hook it up inline.  I get the feeling that digital isn't that simple.

With a VCR you needed tape, with a DVR you need a HDD.
