So, recently I got HDTV through DirecTV and OTA, and I love it.


Here is an interesting question that I haven't been able to find an answer to. Actually, it is a quriosity thing.


The HDTV spec says that in 1080i mode, you get 1080 x 1920 pixels of resolution.


Most Plasmas and RP units I have looked at the specs of claim 1024 x 768 resolution. Some go as high as 1200 x 768.


So, how do you get 1920 pixels of horizontal resolution out of an imaging device that only has at the most 1200 some horizontal pixels?

As far as I know, Plasmas and LCDs with a fixed lower resolution of A x B will have to scale the HD signal to that resolution.

You don't. Even the 1080i RPTVs normally don't. 7inch CRTs don't make it and even the rare 9inchers are marginal. The typical HD camera can only do 1440 anyway. I won't even get into direct view CRT TV shadow masks. The important part is that you love it.
