Hey guys, just a question about projectors and HDTV in general. What exactly do they mean when they say a projector will do 1080i? The resolution for 1080i is 1920x1080 (from what I've read) but when you hook up a comp the res is only 1024x768 (Using the infocus 4805 for my example). Is it limiting the res when you hook up a computer? Or is is scaling the 1080i down? I'm a little confused about what goes on. If anyone would be able to explain that'd be great :)

You guys run a great forum, its got alot of good information and alot of good ideas :)

"Will do" in this case means that it will accept that signal and scale it to the native resolution of the projector (for the 4805 that is 854x480), so you'll lose some detail obviously. There are lots of factors that make projectors "better" or "worse" but when your looking at resolution, it's the native resolution that counts.

There are many considerations in purchasing a new projector. First, and foremost, is price, of course. Then, we have colors (to include black and white), the contrast (the more contrast, the deeper and more vivid the colors are), brightness of the image on the screen. You also must determine material for the screen (white matte is a good place to begin. You must consider at what size you want the image on the screen. The larger the image on the screen, the less the quality. However, with new projectors, overall image can remain quite nice even over 8 feet wide. From 76" to 92" inches seem to be a good range for good quality and good size. Remember, the be at its' very best, the area should be as dark as possible. Any light within room will take something away from image quality. There is also sharpness of image on the screen. This is called resolution. Even a less expensive projector, such as Infocus 4805 and Optoma h31, altho a 480P projector can show a very good to excellent image with HD programming. And these 480p projectors are ideal for 480I/P DVDs. The image on the screen compares quite favorably with a plasma display except, of course, as you gain size, you begin to lose some picture quality But, still, the picture is very good.

You are naturally speaking for yourself in saying the above. Some people obviously make a heck of a lot more money than I do and as such price is not paramount.

No. Well, yes. Monday and Tuesday nights I was on conference bridges for what seemed like forever (+6 hours each night) and kept me away from the forum. Last night I couldn't sleep due to coughing (seeing the doc today). And I was blessed with Mexicans performing residential constructions before 7AM again. I need to buy a BAR and re-educate them.

So basically unless the native res is 1920x1080 the projector is just scaling the image? I figured it was something like that. Hmm okay, thanks for the info guys :)
