I called Comcast in Rockville today to check on my old request to be included in the Beta Testing program. I was told that the Beta program has ended and that I could sign up for HDTV now. Installation is $49.99 and the box costs $14.95 per month. I scheduled install for this Wed. Nov. 27.

So much for the free Beta testing.

Let's see here (grabs calculator) (49.99 + 14.95 * 12) / 12 = $19.12 / month extra for the first year to have the privilege of watching HDTV via cable. This doesn't include the basic cable costs you have to have just to be able to get HD.

I think I'll keep my DirecTV and free (and recordable) OTA, and put the $19/month aside to improve my antenna setup if I need to.
The $14.95 per mo is the same charge as we currently pay for the Digital receiver box. So no addit. costs there. But I think the $50 install fee is a rip off since most of us on this forum could perform the install in 3-5 minutes.
How big is the STB that Comcast is using? I have a tight spot where I would like to put it. My brother has Digital Cable in Norfolk and that box is huge! I'm hoping that it isn't any wider that the standard 17" that my other components are.

I am interested in the HDTV Cable since I live in a Townhouse and I don't nessesarily whish to put up a decent antena (big & directional). I also would have to purchase a Dish 6000 w/ adapter or wait for the PVR 921. Having Comcast would reduce the headaches associated with those additional components.

I can't find the HDTV Info on comcast's web site. Anyone have a direct link?

I called on Monday the 25th and was set up with an appointment to have the 5100 installed the next day. The installer showed up late so I recieved the 20 dollar service credit to knock the overall install price to $30. Still not too happy about paying someone to plug some cables in. Well its all installed and up and running and the HD content (jay leno, HBO) look wonderful. Dont think these boxes have been upgraded with the latest software and firmware becuase 1-99 look horrible and there are black bars on the sides on my 16:9 tv when its not 1080i content. I have the s-video plugged in as well as the component so i can watch regular cable channels in full screen, however if you choose this temporary solution , you will lose the program guide and information of the channels. Does anyone know if and when Comcast MoCo will push the software upgrade on the boxes? And how would I check the versions of software and firmware?
