All the Mac lovers can gloat but I am having a problem getting my HDV footage off my HV10 camcorder into XP. In HDV mode, the camcorder is recognized by XP properly ("AV/C Tape Device") but when I go to get the footage, all the demo software I have tried (Pinnacle Studio 10.5, Adobe Premiere even Windows Movie Maker) fails to see the device. When I shoot normal DV footage and set the camera up to output as a DV camcorder, XP properly sees it as a "Canon DV Camcorder" and my DV footage can be captured, so I am pretty sure my Firewire setup (I did get a new cable just in case) is working properly. Am I simply not using the proper software (and if so, is there any free/trial software I can download to confirm all is well?) or is there some menu setting on the Canon I am missing?

Joe, first of all make sure that your XP has ServicePack2. Secondly download some free HDV capturing software like, HDVsplit ( http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm ), CapDVHS ( http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=CapDVHS ), or even the free trial of Ulead MF 5. That way you can at least rule out the issue of whether your PC can capture HDV.

Pinnacle Studio 10.5 won't do HDV but Studio Plus 10.5 will. and better yet with your purchase of HV10 by Jan 31, 07 Canon is offering a free Pinnacle Studio Plus 10.7 package if you send in the receipt and the UPC code. I already received mine.

I'm not familiar with that cam, but you may want to check to see if the camera - if it does HDV to DV downconversion - is in DV mode.

Thanks all - GodobeHD was correct that Studio 10.5 trial (which is not the PLUS version) was the problem. I was able to capture HDV footage via HDVsplit so it appears my hardware is working properly. I am going to wait for my free Studio Plus 10.7 software that I mailed in the rebate for a few days ago. How long did it take to get yours GodobeHD?

It took five weeks for me to get the Pinnacle 10.6.

HDVsplit should work fine for capturing, except maybe giving you many false error messages of missing frames. Neither Vegas nor Pinnacle gives you HDV feature for their trial version. Ulead MF5 trial does, and it lasts 30 days, just enough for your Pinnacle to arrive.
