Head in the sand....

Someone help me out here...... I keep reading where people are building platforms and filling them with sand... I also read where some are double walling their sub enclosure and filling the void with sand.... I guess I could see where it will add weight and density and cut down on any unwanted resonant frequencies created by the enclosure but what is this really doing?

My speaker stands were built out of MDF and filled with sand. In my case, the sand was mainly used for stability.
My sub enclosures will be partially set into the walls between the wall studs. I was thinking of doing this mainly to try to cut down vibration making it to the wall. Am I nuts here or wasting my time.............

Alot of people think if it costs more it's gotta be better. I've always thought if it weighs more its gotta be better. Guess I better re-think my logic!!
