this is a personal opinion, but "surround sound" headphones are pretty much a "gimick". Consider how close to your ear the transducers are, and then think of how your ears are going to make much separation between units an inch or so apart.
Anyway, good old stereo headphones are fabulous and can give you an excellent listening experience. The difference is the audio seems to be inside your head, as opposed to true surround speakers which are creating a surround soundfield "around" you.
When looking at headphones, there are several decisions to make prior to hunting down the "cans" you want. (a) in-ear earbuds...or...on-ear headphones....or....over the ear headphones: (b) leaving out earbuds, do you want the headphones to be "open back" (light, airy headphones you can hear some surrounding sounds through along with the audio and someone sitting near you can hear the leakage as well), or "closed back" (more traditional headphones that try not to leak sound out or in).
At the office, I use over-the ear Sennheiser HD280 closed back headphones so they do separate me from the office noise and I don't bother others. But at home, I use Sennheiser HD580 over-the-ear open back headphones because I like the lighter feel and I'm not cut off from what is going on around me....but, of course, the ambient noise is much less than the office.
Some brands to look at.... AKG, Sennheiser, Beyer Dynamic, Audio Technica. There are lots of other brands, but these guys have been at it for the long haul.
What is your price range ? And let us know what "type" of headphones you are looking for.
