Im new here and was looking at buying my husband a home theater surround sound for Valentines day and I am clueless about what receiver to buy him. It will be a 5.1 setup and I need it as cheap as possible. Preferably around $200.

Is there one in my price range that will work? I found a Yamaha RX-V365 on ebay for some VERY good deals. Is this a good receiver?

I hope he already has speakers for a 5.1 set up
Don't buy something from eBay if you don't really know what you are doing with the equipment.

Try the Crutchfield Outlet or Crutchfield, or even better give them a call. They can offer you free tech support and advice that Random Ebay Seller cannot. You can get a full 5.1 package $300 and brand new receivers for under $200.

If something goes wrong or you need tech help then eBay will leave you dead in the water.

Crutchfield can be a little expensive though, she's buying it for her husband who knows a thing or two about HT or else he wouldn't be getting this gift.

You don't have to have a 5 channel receiver, but you will want one that haas HDMI inputs for sure. That Yamaha looks alright, but it does not support audio over HDMI, not a deal breaker but inconvenient.

Try the low end receivers from Pioneer, Onkyo and Denon as well. At that price point(200) you are going to need to find a deal.

If you buy from Best Buy or the like, there is a 30 day return period. He can try it and decide to keep it or go to something else.

You may have to spend more than $200. The Denon 590 is a great value, more than he needs, but I doubt he would return it. He should be good to go for quite awhile with that AVR.

If he has no speakers, well Best Buy sells full 5.1 systems in a box solutions as well.

I'd take a look at Newegg. They've got some nice prices on receivers.
Can you guys recommend me specific models? I really am not sure what to look for at all. Its all greek to me when I read the specs.

just give him a gift certificate from Crutchfield or something so he can pick out exactly what he wants...stereo is a hobby, researching watch receiver to buy is part of the fun.

I'd be a little bit disappointed if my wife gave me a 'as cheap as possible' receiver A, and I really wanted receiver B with some so-and-so features for a few bucks more. I will still tell her that I LOVE it thou. :p

How'd you feel if he gives you a bottle of 'as cheap as possible' perfume/makeup, when you really wanted perfume/makeup?
Ok well would a budget of $350 get him something he would like better? I really want to get everything for him and that is why I am trying to do all this and surprise him.

You may want to post this in the HTIB thread. You are trying to get speakers and receiver for that amount correct? In that thread there may be some good suggestions for you. Good luck and hope you find what you want. Oh and you have the same birthday as my daughter.

buying a used receiver is very risky, its like putting flowers in a box and sending them from new york to cail.

I never said I wanted to buy used. There are a lot of brand new ones on Ebay for VERY good deals!
If its just a receiver you want for that money(350 or less) check out the Denon 1610,Onkyo RC160,Yamaha 565,665. Of these the 1610 and the RC160 would be the first ones I'd choose.

The Energy setup you're looking at in the speaker thread will be a nice 5.0.

Your efforts in the subwoofer thread seem to have led you to the usual suspects (

For $300 you can get a refurbed Marantz sr4002 .

Good option, quality receiver.

AC4L is a reliable vendor.
get him a gift certificate like someone suggested, or take him on a surprise visit to the store and let him choose. Make sure you talk to the store and give them your budget beforehand

Nicole for $46 more you could get him this and it's a very nice AVR. They area n authorized dealer and a reputable one. It is "open box, like new" but it carries the same warranty as a new one. I was about to get it for a friend that was looking for the same in the same price range($350) but I was able to get a new one for another $24.

At the time I called and was told it was one that was returned because they let the customer upgrade to a more expensive one. He took it out of the box but never hooked it up. BTW no tax and free shipping

Sounds like you're on your way.

Is a DVD or BluRay player part of your plans?

Also, even if cables are supplied (with new components), they will be ultra-cheap and need to be replaced. Needn't do it right this minute (though you will surely need speaker cables*), but here are a couple favored vendors; budget and quality:

*Immediate-need speaker cables can be bought at Vanns or a hardware store (bulk).
