I just bought a new 52" Samsung LCD from Fry's, LN52B630, brought it home, unpacked it, plugged in the power and coax cable and...nothing happens! I know it's getting power because the red light on the center front of the panel blinks constantly every second or so, and when I press buttons on the remote (or on the front touchpanel) the status light blinks faster for a moment, but still nothing happens.

I called the 800 number and they said I would have to have a service tech out, which is ridiculous on a brand new TV, I'm just going to take it back to Fry's since it's only one day old. But frankly this doesn't make me want to exchange it...I just want to wash my hands of the whole thing. The TV doesn't have any visible damage and the shipping carton was in great shape, it didn't look like it had been mishandled.

Is this a common problem? Any ideas on how to fix it before I take it back this weekend?

So Samsung offering to come to your home and service it in house at no cost to you wasn't enough? Tell me, what exactly could Samsung have done to make the situation better and you happy? My guess is nothing but please enlighten me.

Manufacturing, shipping, deliver defects are a fact of life. Yeah, you were one of the unlucky ones. Fry's will probably be happy to exchange or return it i'm sure. Just don't think your odds of a repeat are any less with another band of TV. In fact they may be worse becasue you are starting over.

But hey, whatever makes you the customer happy.

Well if I bought a brand new television, I expect it to work. The service tech could take days, if not weeks to come to your house. What if they suggest to take it to their shops to get it fixed? They'll probably replace it with refurbished/oem components which aren't the same as the original. So no, I won't accept a Samsung technician because it was new. Why should I wait to get it fixed? I'd rather get it returned and get another set that doesn't need fixing.

I'd take it back and get a new one.

Yes, take it back. Just make sure you really want the TV if you decide to purchase again. Because Fry's does NOT take returns on TV's 24" or larger unless its defective.

"The service tech could take days, if not weeks to come to your house." When I called samsung they aid they would have someone call in the next 48 hours. They called back after just 3 hours. They offered to come by and look at ti the next day.

"They'll probably replace it with refurbished/oem components which aren't the same as the original." I think you are confused. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. The parts used are new not refurbished.

"So no, I won't accept a Samsung technician because it was new. " It's still new, just with working parts.

"Why should I wait to get it fixed?" you made the choice to call them. Again i ask you, what did you expect them to do? Your well within the return period... You could just take it back for a new one. But it sounds like you can't be satisfied.

"I'd rather get it returned and get another set that doesn't need fixing." Yeah me to. Why not do that? Why did you even bother to call? Did you think they were going to para-drop a new TV on your doorstop?

I think you're confused about one thing. First of all, I'm not the person experiencing the problems - just stating what I think. And that is what I would do if I were in a situation like that. Samsung could have replaced it, they could... - but then again it doesn't hurt to try.

OEM can be refurbished. It's another way of outsourcing. It all depends on your location and time, because last time I had a technician come over, it took a week and a half. And they didn't have the necessary supplies to fix it so I had to wait another week to get it fixed. As a way of cutting costs, they would MOST LIKELY use refurbished components first hand... especially if you're not paying a dime.

I apologize because I misread your post. Your initial question confused me a bit, which came much of a conclusion for me, so I skipped the rest of the post. But yes, the obvious solution is to get it replaced. Returning large items like televisions, I'd get lazy and irritated to have to pack things again and go through the same process of possibly finding another television or purchase and as a result I'd try to find an alternative solution or advise, even though that it's obvious. Which the OP probably feels which he did mention, "I just want to wash my hands of the whole thing."

I'd let others do the job for me. Why? Because I paid for a product that I expect to work. People do not want to go through this process, and that's why I pray everyday that it doesn't happen to me. Problems like that just add more work and it's not something that everyone would easily accept and say, "ALRIGHT! I guess I'll do it again. YAY!"

Once again, I apologize.

a blinking red light is a common diagnostic indicator that something major is wrong. duh, right?

you did right to call samsung; many retailers, e.g. amazon, require that you first initiate a case number at the manufacturer to make sure that there is definitely a problem that at least requires a service call to diagnose/repair before they will accept a return as defective, thus negating restocking/shipping fees.

the only thing you might *possibly* do is unplug the set for a while and then replug to see if that rectifies the problem. if you're plugged into a power strip/etc. plug instead directly into the wall. it's a longshot, but worth the try. if that doesn't work, sure return the set, you just got the 1 in x that is DOA.

Update: I went back to the TV last night and tried hooking up my computer via a VGA cable. I had not done this when I wrote my first post. After a few minutes, this did bring the TV out of perpetual sleep mode. Once the screen came on for the first time, I was able to switch the source over to the cable and pick up signals. However, the TV would still drop back into sleep mode (e.g. steady blinking indicator light, no response to remote or touch panel) if the laptop was disconnected, even if it was currently showing a cable channel. Also, some of the on-screen menus were distorted - they are supposed to be grey/orange but sometimes they would show up as almost 100% white and be impossible to navigate. You could only see a very feint image of white text on a white box. Other menus were fine. The picture quality from HD channels was great and it also had no problem playing a sample AVI from a usb drive (I had to leave the VGA port hooked up to keep it from going to sleep during this testing).

I turned it on this morning and it seems fine - both problems are gone. But I have no explanation for the erroneous sleep mode nor the garbled on screen display and I'm still concerned that the defect that caused them could pop up again at any time in the future, especially out of warranty. Do you think I would be excessively paranoid to do an exchange? It's a hassle to box it up, and I don't like unnecessarily cause the store to restock stuff, but it's a lot of money to me and I'd be ticked if the thing started having this problem again in a month, and then I've gotta take time off work to meet the repairman, who has to order parts, etc.

$1,500 worth the hassle to box it up? Your pick. This is NOT NORMAL guy.

If it makes u feel better, I recently tried to sell my 120 LB CRT analog TV and no takers! Am moving shortly and am thinking my appendix is gonna burst hauling this monster out! Fortunately a neighbor took the bait and am off the hook.

Update: The unit was working fine in the morning, but when I got home it started acting up again, not turning on. So packed it up and back it went. Of course when I got to the store, they tested it and it did turn on, but they didn't give me a hard time about the exchange. New unit seems great so far! Definitely recommend.

Curious Question, what's with using the word update instead of edit. You're reminding me of this guy.
