Help! Can't get surround to work with my Denon 2802!

I'm flustered! Certainly no expert here but not a dummy either! Here's the problem...

Recently installed HD cable box, DVD player and new RPTV. I replaced all my crummy cables with Rhinos. I'm using optical out of both the cable box and dvd into the Denon. I assigned the optical inputs for both sources using the on-screen menu from the receiver. All I get is 2 channel audio!

The Denon shows it is receiving a Dolby Digital signal on it's front panel display. Test tones to my speakers come in loud and clear so they are hooked up properly. The strange thing is when I hit the 'status' button on the front of the Denon it shows "2/0/0" which I assume to mean 2-channel audio.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

bump....Anybody? Help!!!!!!!!!!
I have a Denon 4802 and don't know how the units differ, but are you setting the Input mode to Auto? That way it should find the optical inputs. On my unit there are also "Direct" and "Stereo" buttons which need to be off.

I assume that regardless of what the Status button shows, you've gone around to the speakers and hear nothing from the surrounds?

Thanks for the reply! Actually, I do have it set to Auto and that's what is so confusing. The panel on the unit is showing that the digital output from the DVD is there. I don't have "direct" and "stero" buttons on my unit. When I go to the onscreen menu and do a tone test, all 5 speakers are active. When i play a dvd, the unit shows Dolby Digital, but nlt 2 channel sound comes out. When i hit the "staus" button on the unit it shows 2/0/0 which I assume to mean 2-channel. Any other ideas?

You don't have any of the surround ambiance modes on, do you? Would be interesting to connect the regular RCA cables and see if you get Dolby surround through them. Do you have Prologic II on your unit? If nothing else works you might try restoring the defaults (if that's an option) and go from there.

This unit has A and B surround sound outputs on it right? I know my 3802 does. Are you sure you hooked your surround speakers to the correct output when you were rewireing everything? Maybe the reciever is set to output to the wrong set of outputs.
