Help choosing-Firehawk G3 or SS

1210 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  FLBoy
I currently own the 1st generation Firehawk screen and have loved it! I want to buy the Firehawk G3 and or the SS, but not sure which I may be happier with.

I have a 100” diagonal screen and sit exactly 1.65 x’s screen width, which appears to be right on the border of the minimum recommended throw distance for the G3. I’m used to the gain of the original firehawk and I’m happy but looking for a smoother screen, since I now have a high powered BenQW6000 1080P projector. I do use the screen during the day and of course at night in a living room environment.

Would I be better off with the SS or would you think I’d be best suited for the G3?

I'm also taking a peak at the Black Diamond II, but I can't seem to find one on demo and I've had no experience with their brand/company/customer service. Any comments/help would be greatly appreciated.

I would appreciate any feedback!

First, let's agree on some definitions. Throw is the distance from the front of the projector lens to the screen. The distance from the viewer's eyes to the screen is called Viewing Distance. The issue here is how far back is your projector. Does it meet the minimum throw distance for the G3?

The minimum throw distance has to do with noticeable hot spotting on angular reflective screens. If the throw is too short for the screen, the center of the picture will be noticeably brighter than the outsides. Having said that, I would venture to guess that if you do not have noticeable hot spotting with your first gen FH, you probably won't with the G3 either.

You're right..thanks for clarifying....I meant to say the front of the projector/throw is exactly 1.65 times the screen width and I sit 128" back from the screen, which is closer than I'm used to...( I moved to a new home) I'm only getting slight hot spotting now due to/I'm only guessing, the brightness of the projector.

I guess the last real question is currently I really see the grain/artifacts of the screen and I'm hoping the G3 has greatly improved this and or maybe because I'm so close to the screen, would you think the SS might seem like a better choice?

By the way...thanks for the help/comments...it's greatly appreciated.

I'm interested in the Black Diamond .8 but I've heard I may be unhappy with the texture of the screen....

As to hot spotting, the SST would be a better choice than the G3. As to visible texture, you will still see it on the G3. I can't say whether the SST shows less texture than the G3, as I have not seen the two side by side. Perhaps someone else will comment on that.
