help choosing mits vs. toshi?

Great forums - I've been reading, and reading, and reading...

Debating between two different 65" DLPs:

toshiba 65HM167

mitsubishi WD-65731.

Same price at Sears.

First big TV (if you discount the 40 day relationship I've had with a 52" RCA that is on its way back to the factory - ugh). Bulb replacement doesn't scare me, but I'm a little concerned about SSE or RBE.

Thanks in advance

I would think you'd want to be looking into the 65732, but here goes.

First glance:

The Toshiba is new with 3 HDMI ports, the 65731 is now about two models old with the 65732 being around or just being better and the new 65733 replacing it and the 65734 replacing the 65732.

Blacks:

Mitsu, the 731 has no IRIS, so it's blacks are probably not as good as the Toshiba that does have an iris. Take a look at this shootout chart with the older 65hm196 and the 731, it's in order of best tv after the survey, top being the best: http://hometheatermag.com/images/arc...207WDYT.2a.jpg

--Toshiba: pro ---- Mistu con-----

Rainbows:

Both have them, the Toshiba is not that bad, but the Mitsu has a 6-color wheel that really helps reduce them.

--Toshiba: con ---- Mistu pro-----

SSE:

Both have them as there is no tv without it. I'd have to say the Toshiba is the worst between the two.

--Toshiba: con ---- Mistu pro-----

Thanks. I think I'll go with the Toshiba. Checked the units out in three different locations locally and didn't see anything to justify not going with the better picture.

Lmao wow, those are some funny numbers for contrast ratio. Rather embarrassing actually.
heh, I wish I've seen that, or I'd steer clear from 65731 model a while back. Just wish there is 65732 is avail in this area.
Well I got the Tosh TV, after using 65731 for 3 weeks... I now see what you mean what RBE =) I noticed it when I was using the crosshair pattern of video test DVD. No idea on SSE and don't wanna know either. =p

Picture is alot better tho, especially in SD mode.

Calibrating the Video, (Blue filter for Color & Tint w/NTSC Test Screen) using Digital Video Essentials ($16.48 w/FREE SH) will help minimize RBE.

At the same time you can Calibrate the Brightness & Contrast w/Pluge Test Screen, ... just like Film/DVD Mastering / Broadcast HDTV Studios.

Thank you for the tip, ordering that DVD now. Thanks again.

I've only noticed RBE at a bothersome level on a test pattern. I don't see it at all in normal TV viewing. I can make myself see it with white text on a black background if I move my eyes fast.
Yep you're correct, I havent seen it at all during my tv viewing last night. Just the test pattern. Now I wonder if I notice that on my old Mits and just never thought about it. Doesn't matter, it's hardly affecting me, if not, at all.
I have a 65732, and it is the first dlp that I have seen that I can not see the rainbow effect, unlike the sammy's and toshiba's at the time that I bought it. As far as SDTV viewing, it is as good as any dlp/lcd rptv that I have seen, it does take some tweaking to get it there though. Typical like most brands out of the box it is in "torch" mode designed to look good in the store.

I also don't recommend you stretch 4:3 sources, it really takes away from the picture quality.

As far as bulb life goes, mine went at 2400 hours
, not very happy about that.

I have yet to see rainbow effect... but I guess to some people its really noticeable

I notice RBE on all DLP, even once with LED DLP. But it did seem clear that the Mitsu 6-wheel tv was harder to see them than other DLPs.
