Hi,

No, You're not seeing double, I posted this under a different title before, but I thought a better title would help!

I thought it would be interesting to compile a list for each market to indicate how the markets stack up against each other regarding the availability of network HD programming.

I represent a frustrated Connecticut HDTV wannabe. Here in Hartford, CT which is the #28 DMA in the country, only 1 of the 4 major networks is broadcasting HD in full power. It seems to be much worse than other similar sized markets, so I'm trying to gather real data.

I'm looking for 1 post from each market that lists whether or not the affiliate in your DMA is broadcasting HD and if it's at full power. I know Fox is not broadcasting HD yet, so if for FOX if they are passing the 480p widescreen, that's what I'm looking for. An example of what I'm looking for is as follows:

*******************

Hartford, CT (#28)

CBS- WFSB- HD in Low Power

ABC- WTNH- HD Fulll Power

NBC- WVIT- No Digital Broadcast

FOX- WTIC- No Digital Broadcast

Note: WVIT is not broadcasting OTA, but is available on some cable systems.

********************

First, let me say that if anyone knows of a place where this info is already compiled, please post it here so that we don't have to re-compile it!

So I think the possible status' are:

HD in Full Power

HD in Low Power

Digital, but not HD in Full Power

Digital, but not HD in Low Power

No Digital Broadcast

If you folks want to throw in the other networks too in your posts, that's fine, I didn't want to ask for too much. Also, if you don't know the ranking of your market, then just post it anyway. Someone else can post the ranking later.

Here's hoping for some interesting info!

State College, Altoona, Johnstown, PA

DMA #96

WTAJ - CBS - Altoona - Low power DTV, no HD

WATM - ABC - Altoona - Low power DTV, no HD (Expected May 2005 max+HD)

WJAC - NBC - Johnstown - Full power DTV, HD

WWCP - FOX - Johnstown - Low power DTV, no ED (Expected May 2005 max+HD)

WPSX - PBS - Clearfield/State College - Nearly full power DTV, experimental SFN, HD

WKBS - Religious - Altoona - Low power DTV, no HD

To summarize:

WPSX (PBS) is doing the most with DTV and HD. WJAC is the only commercial broadcaster in HD during NBC HD shows.

All of these, except noted are from nice, high antenna heights in comparison to their analog facilities.

Cincinnati, Ohio - DMA #32

WCPO-DT 10 (ABC) HD, Full Power

WCVN-DT 24 (KET/PBS) Full Power, HD per their schedule (Transmitter/tower 6 miles south of Downtown Cincy in N KY)

WXIX-DT 29 (Fox) - Full Power - Sends Fox Widescreen

WKRC-DT 31 (CBS) - Full Power, HD

WSTR-DT 33 (WB) - Low Power - No HD - Directional antenna pattern doesn't favor some important directions ...

WCET-DT 34 (PBS) - HD - Adequete power, 215KW ERP STA

WLWT-DT 35 (NBC) - HD - Adequete power, 512KW ERP STA

WPTO-DT (PBS/ThinkTV) - Not yet on air - CP Mod for WXIX tower, although the analog station transmits from some 20 Miles NNW of Cincinnati, in Oxford, Ohio. From what I've heard, Current plans are for a spring 2004 on air date, with some sort of HD schedule.

Dayton, OH (DMA #58)

WBDT-DT 18 (WB) No HD - Full power (Note- They have said they are working on timetable for HD)

WRGT-DT 30 (Fox) - No Fox Widescreen - Unsure about power they are operating at, but for most part, they seem quite receivable in the area.

WHIO-DT 41 (CBS) - HD - Adequete power (275KW ERP) - Antenna pattern doesn't favor the SW, Towards a analog station on 41 some ~120 miles distant.

WDTN-DT 50 (ABC) - HD - Adequete power (125 KW ERP STA - They've asked FCC for an increase to 1000KW ERP for full power)

WKEF-DT 51 (NBC) - HD - Adequete power (95KW ERP STA - Their Full power CP from FCC is for a little over 100KW ERP)

WPTD-DT 58 (PBS/ThinkTV) - HD - Full Power

"Unknown DMA"

-------------------------

WKOI-DT 39 (TBN) - No HD of course - Low Power, Directional transmitting antenna favors only their Community of License, Richmond, IN. I believe Transmitting antenna is some 500Feet up, but analog transmitting antenna is much higher. Although their community of License is Richmond, IN, The broadcasting tower is located some 20 miles NNW of Cincinnati, 20 miles SW of Dayton, Near Oxford, Ohio.

--------------

There are also several other analog LP and one Class A(UPN) station in the area, none of which currently have channel assignments for Digital from FCC. The owner of the UPN station(WBQC-CA) in Cincinnati has told me in the past they can switch to digital at any time, but will only do so when they have enough viewers able to see their digital channel.

Hope this helps,

#1) I am in VA, not PA.

#2) It is on channel 4. 2.3kW is not a small number. My PBS (WBRA listed above) is on channel 3 and only puts about that much power in my direction and I receive them WELL whenever e-skip is not destroying the signal. And I'm 79 miles away.

IMO, Low-VHF doesn't need more than 10 kW to EASILY blanket an area.

That won't help anyone. They do not keep track of programming or whether anyone's doing HD or just SD digital.
