I have a Denon AVR 3600 that is about 7 years old. I recently built a dedicated theater room in my basement and bought a new Denon 3803 for use in the theater, figuring I would keep the 3600 in the family room. I moved my Atlantic Technology speakers from the family room to the new theater about a month ago, and just received a new set of Fluance speakers today for use as a secondary system in the family room with the 3600. However, when I tried to hook up the speakers and turn on the receiver, it is now in "protection" mode and won't work. I've unhooked everything and following the instructions for to reinitialize with everything unhooked, but still in protection mode. I just found out that my nephew turned on the receiver last week with the wires for the 5.1 speakers still attached, but without the speakers on the other end. Is it possible that the receiver has short circuited? Is there anything I can do? I'm really anxious to hear if these new Fluance speakers are any good, but I'm really concerned that the received is fried.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Kirk

I recently had a similar problem with a four year old Sony receiver. It ended up being a loose connection inside the unit; repair cost $75. Now, I'm not saying that's exactly what your situation is, but, mine would spontaneously go into that protect mode for no apparent reason. One way to help determine if it is, indeed, a loose connection is to rap the receiver on its case when it is working properly. If it crackles, or goes in to protect mode, then it's likely a loose connection.

Its possible that there is a blown fuse inside.

If you turned off the unit, disconnected everuthing, turned the unit back on - and it is still in protection mode, then hopefully it is just a fuse.

Open up the unit and look for a fuse inside, near the speaker outputs (but it could be anywhere).

If you don't feel comfortable doing this then take it to a repair shop.

Thanks for the suggestions. I spoke with Denon technical support today, and they suggested that it might be a shorted circuit in the amp. No Denon repair shops anywhere nearby, so I'll probably find a local electronics repair shop. I may open it up to see if its a blown fuse first, so thanks for the suggestion Jared.
