Help finding a sub for 330's

1077 Views 17 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Morley Dotes
HI Folks,

I am building a little HT in my basement. The size of the room is 10Wx12Dx7H (actually, the viewing distance will likely be 10 feet). The room is open on two sides. Floor will likely be carpet. I have finally settled on Paradigm 330's for my speakers, and would really appreciate some advice on matching a sub to the 330's. I would like to stay under $1000.

Many thanks in advance!

Indeed! You too? In all these years, no one has recognized it. That's been my moniker for a LONG time. LOL.

Now, how about some help picking out a sub?

Yah, I reread him all the time...guilty pleasure.

You've got lot's of choices in your budget. What are you looking for, small form factor/musical or large, visceral and musical?

I'm running dual SVS PB10-NSD's in a room just about that size and it sounds great. Of course, I bought mine one at a time. If you're spending the $1000 at once, you can get one bigger, better sub. I'd check out eD, Epik, SVS, and Hsu. There's some great stuff out there and available for under $1000.

I guess there are two approaches to this. You can get one big sub, or two smaller ones. Two smaller subs can likely get you pretty comparable SPL's above 20hz, and when placed separated from each other, they can smooth your bass response considerably. On the other hand, one bigger, more expensive sub might have better sound quality because of a better driver, amp, etc.

Other people here have far more knowledge than I do. I'd definitely look at Craigsub's rankings if you haven't already. Good luck.
Not sure how useful this is. I have just sold my 330 as I am moving, the 330s have not much to offer south of 90hz so best to get something that has enough headroom and speed to include this very audible region. My ex 330 L/C/R matched quite beautifully. Enjoy.
Sorry for the late reply, things got a little heated hear.....

Ron, I am looking for something that will jump start my heart.
I am out of my apartment, and the basement is mine, ALL MINE! Well, okay, it is mine, but after the kids....and of course, ladies first, so, I'm 4th up for it. Either case, no neighbors can/will complain. It will be strictly home theater, for movies and gaming. I am looking forward to playing Call of Duty on it, as well as Halo3!

lalakersfan, the idea of two subs sounds great, but since I don't have that much space, I think I will try to find one big chest pounding monster.

breadvan, thanks for the input. What did your 330's match well with?

I just stacked mine, one on top of the other - gets you a 6dB increase in output as well as taking up the same amount of floor space as one PB10
. My tiny 11x10 room didn't have enough space for two subs either - after all, it does double as a bedroom
.

If you can actually fit something like an Epik Knight or Caliber, your room will be absolutely insane in terms of bass. I think my dual PB10's are pretty crazy, and the Knight or Caliber will outperform them in every respect, especially 20hz and below! If you can fit their large profiles, I'd say go for an Epik. The Epiks should be louder and sound better than PB10's. However, if you don't have the floor space for them, I can enthusiastically recommend dual PB10's, stacked in a room that size, as mine is nearly identical. I think either setup will give you an incredibly visceral experience for movies and gaming. Good luck!

Stephen,

No we're talking! Any place online/sponsors who sell the Caliber? I do have space for a decent sized sub, just not for two. Plus, I can always use it as a table, and this way I would not have to mix my drinks, just pump up the bass.

The Caliber is made by an internet direct company, Epik Subwoofers. Here's a link to the Caliber on their website.

For $699 (probably around $800 after shipping), it's one heck of a subwoofer. Unless you're into car audio and bass competitions, I think it should suffice for your small room
. Check it out.

I have a small REL Quake which was very handy and adequate for my use, they won't go particularly deep or loud if that's what you are looking for, but for an 8 incher, it is a decent sub for music. I once hammered it playing the Black Hawk Down 'fuxxing irene' scene, it was quite exciting, not saying it would out gun bigger and more expensive sub.

I have an SVS PC-13 Ultra on order for my future HT though, which should be fun once everything is in place.
Thanks guys....I wish I could demo the Caliber, but it seems like it is just what the doctor ordered. I am hoping to get over to test out the Paradigm 330's this weekend and then order the Caliber. I still need to figure out which receiver to get. I am hoping to have my electrician in this weekend to run a line just for the electronics. I can't wait for everything to be done!

MANY thanks to for all of your help!

Glad to help...just make sure you realize how freakin HUGE it is...the Caliber is 27H x 20W x 30D inches (31D with grill). It may sound pretty big, but I can guarantee it'll look even bigger in person
. It should seriously rock that room (it would be more than sufficient in a 3500+ cubic foot room, not to mention your little

Many thanks....the thing is, I will probably be moving in a year or two, and hopefully will have a larger HT room, so it should serve me well in that I won't have to upgrade. Of course, I will have to look at my layout, as that sub does seem like a coffee table with an attitude. I am sure my wife won't mind (she's just happy to get the 60 inch out of our room and thrilled to get a 46" hung up on the wall, clearing up valuable floor space). You are right though.....I am going to see hot it fits........okay, I'm back. It looks good on paper! It will fit between the tv and the wall, and still be about 4 inches (maybe 6" on a diagonal) away from the tv (is that too close???). So, it should be fine. And, the good news is, my electrician is coming tomorrow and he's going to put in some more recessed lights, and also run a line from the panel just for my electronics! That means I should be at least able to watch the superbowl down there, and can start placing my orders next week (I first want to be sure he actually shows up tomorrow).
Keeping my fingers crossed.

Well, another no show from the electrician.
However, I have a question. I'm sure it is a dumb question, but I have not read anything in the specs saying that it is magnetically shielded.....and seeing that it has 3 magnets, I would think it should be if I were going to keep it that close to the tv....so, are subs normally shielded?
See less See more
Most subs aren't shielded. If you're 2-3 feet away from a CRT you should be fine. If you have a newer set, LCD, plasma or DLP, it's a non-issue.

The Epik subs, while not being petite, will definitely do the trick for massive, clean, LFE.
Ron,

Many thanks! It will be sitting about 8 inches away from my sony grand wega 60 inch projection (I don't remember the model number, I bought it about4-5 years ago), but it will be replaced in a few months.
