I'd like to spend about $2k for the seven speakers for a 7.1 system. I'm not asking what's the best because the standard answer is always "go listen yourself." I'm just doing research right now on what's available. The dollar amount can be raised if good QPR by doing so - in other words, I'm not spending $3k on something that's only slightly better than what I could get for $2k. My current speakers (Athena) totalled only about $500.

In-wall/on-wall/etc - it doesn't matter because the room that they'll ultimately be going in is still being designed, but do in-wall speakers tend to produce sound quality comparable to similarly priced freestanding speakers?

I've looked at speakers on Paradigm and Axiom websites, and it appears that I could afford some of their lesser offerings. What else is out there though that might be in my price range?

Also, I'm in Michigan (Lansing), and I'd like to demo speakers to see what's available and what sounds good to me - anyone know of any good shops for this?

I would go for the B&W 600 series or Paradigm Monitor series, both have great bang for the buck.

Do you have a amp or is that apart of the 2g budget?

If you don't want to look at the speakers or have them get in the way the go with inwall speakers.

Don't buy speakers you can listen to first. You don't want 2k worth of speaker you don't want and can't sell.

Here are dealer locations, just go on the manufacture website to get this info in the future.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll check em all out and see which I can demo. The 2K is just for the 7 speakers; I'll probably stick with my old eD sub, and I'll be upgrading from a receiver (HK AVR354) to probably Emotiva pre/pro and amp. My question is really just so I can find out what my options are and not end up wasting my money on an expensive set of crap speakers - I assume that any speakers recommended here are at least decent. Thanks again!

As long as you are going with the external amp the Emotiva 7.0 speaker package will be a tough one to beat. They are 4 ohm rated.

I own Emotiva 8.3s and ERDs and find them to be more than decent.
