HELP! HDMI Handshake Issue?

2134 Views 20 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  leebo
Hey guys, I've had a Yamaha HTR-3066 for about three months with no issues - then, all of a sudden, I was completely unable to receive a video or audio signal from my HTPC. I tried everything - turning them on/off in different orders, using different input/outputs, different settings, I unplugged the AVR for 5 min, I reset it to defaults, did a system restore on my PC and finally reinstalled my audio/video drivers on my HTPC. Nothing worked.

I called Yamaha support, and set up a repair for a new HDMI board on my AVR. I have been doing without for the past few days, but today, just on a whim, I tried again and it worked. For a while. I got the same issue after turning off and on different components (and using the HDMI control feature on my AVR). It seems totally random! I was unable to receive any signal from my HTPC, but got one from another PC just fine. It seems as though after I plug the AVR into another PC, it fixes it for my HTPC.

What's going on?? Do I need a new HDMI board on my AVR, or is my HTPC the problem?

Anybody? Problem just happened again... Can't get any signal on my TV through my AVR using my HTPC as source...
try this sequence.

turn on tv

turn on avr and select htpc input

reboot pc

does that fix it?

Thank you for your reply, but I've tried that many times to no avail. I woke up this morning and turned on the TV (PC was already on), plugged the right cables into the AVR, and it worked... This thing is driving me nuts!

Sometimes when it won't connect, if I power on the TV and PC (not AVR) the laptop says it's connected, even though the AVR is off. But as soon as I turn the AVR on, it disconnects.
If your using an amd video card or apu, I had handshake issues, I went NVidia and haven't looked back.
Actually I'm currently using Nvidia - using Optimus as well, if that makes any difference.

But it seems like if I disconnect them for an hour or so, they'll connect. Until something goes wrong...

I'm in the process of getting a new HDMI board installed in my AVR, hopefully that will help. Because if it's my PC that's the issue, I'm going nuts! Not sure why it would work fine for so long then just quit.

I power up with the order TV, AVR, PC, but what's the correct way to power down?

(and using the HDMI control feature on my AVR).

Do you mean HDMI-CEC? I had a lot of problems dropping audio when I had HDMI-CEC enabled on the AVR. Diferrent brand (Denon), but I'd try it without the CEC enabled. It's one of those promising features that's implemented slightly differently by each manufacturer and I think it causes problems when the brands are mixed.

It's called "HDMI Control", it powers your receiver on/off when you power your tv on/off. I don't use it, it's just one of the settings I messed with
Try this: http://www.thehtpc.net/htpc-tips-and-tweaks/solving-your-hdmi-handshake-issues-once-and-for-all/

You'll need to make a few tweaks most likely to get it to work on your computer. See my thread here for what I had to do to get it to work. http://www.avsforum.com/t/1514189/black-screen-issues-with-radeon-6450#post_24290247

I don't have an AVR, but I think it might work for you.

Unfortunately, I came across this already in my frantic search for a solution. I tried many times to no avail! Thank you very much for replying though
Would "Receivers, Amps, and Processors" be a better section for this thread? I would take the issue there, but I don't want to make a duplicate thread

Hmmmm, this should work. Did you try running the .bat file you created by itself. Does the screen flash/go black, then turn back on? If not, then you don't have it set up properly. Took me a while to get the right devcon file.

If not, then maybe try the Geffen HDMI detective? It's around $90 I think, but should solve any EDID/handshake problems. Or the tape trick on pin 19?

Actually, I didn't try your method - I'm sorry, I didn't pay close attention to your post! Unfortunately, I have just sent the unit in for repair in hopes that a new HDMI board will solve the issue. Thank you again for replying gewbert, I really appreciate it. If, all forbid, the problem still persists after I get the unit back, I'll definitely try your method.
I just got the unit back from repair today - no help... Still the same issues... So I called Yamaha again, and there's nothing more they can do besides replace it. Which will take another month or so.

I did setup devcon correctly and got my displays to refresh, but sadly, it doesn't work. I can get my PC to recognize that there's a TV connected to it (being passed through my receiver, that is), but I cannot get any audio/video...

Somebody, anybody, help??

I'm going to assume you've tried more than one physical input on the receiver (?)... Do you get the same problem with all HDMI devices connected to it or just the HTPC?

MIght not be your problem but I had a very weird HDMI problem myself once. My receiver is not a Yamaha but I'd imagine something similar could happen with any receiver, depending on how the components are inside the receiver. I bought my receiver "used" and it had been "rough handled" in shipping before it even got to the "original owner" (i.e. from the manufacturer to the store). I actually had someone on the intarwebs buy this for me, long-distance, as he found one at the manufacturer's outlet in his state and I had posted on a forum looking for one. The guy tested the unit before sending it to me and told me the volume was busted...from the store! No point in returning it since they had no more of them and you really couldn't find this receiver anywhere anymore. When I got the receiver I wanted the volume knob to work so I had it fixed under warranty. Well when I got it back from the shop with the volume encoder replaced, I brought it home and the HDMI video worked perfectly fine. The audio however would cut out completely after 10-20 mins of use--very puzzling. I could shut the receiver down for about an hour or two and then try again and it would work fine again...for another 10 mins, lol.

So I brought it back to the shop and the guy realised the unit had been "rough handled" during shipping at some point. Initially he asked me where I'd bought it and told him it was relatively hard to get this receiver these days and I had someone buy it for me long-distance and ship it to me. So I was technically the 2nd owner but the guy bought it right at the manufacturer's outlet.

So he said yeah he thought it was busted during shipping the first time since the volume knob was slightly off-centre but he replaced it anyway given it was purchased recently (even going by the receipt from the original seller). Had to explain to him that it was how the original buyer got it at the store, and not from that guy shipping it to me. I couldn't have him return it since it was the last one and again it wasn't too easy to get one of these anymore. He was also puzzled 'cause he tested everything before approving it to go back to me (it's a pretty large repair facility with many techs).

Anyway, he said he'd take a look at it again and what he found was pretty odd. Since the receiver had been damaged somewhere in shipping before, the entire chassis had been twisted a bit! Nothing visually seen from the outside but definitely not 100% true/straight internally. Once the receiver was working for a short time, it would heat up and the change in temp would cause things to warp slightly more, such that the HDMI board would partially unseat from the connector to the mainboard (or whatever board it connected to)! The fix? He simply removed one screw from the HDMI board and that way it didn't pull away from the board and it was fixed. Said he had it running for a few entire work days, playing music over HDMI (the guy actually loved the receiver himself lol) and it was fine. He said to fix it "properly" he'd have to replace the entire chassis which would be pricey and he'd have to contact the manufacturer about it given the unit had signs of physical distress, and even if they did approve it they'd probably try to send me a newer-model replacement unit, which I definitely did not want. Needless to say I took the receiver back as it was, fully working with that screw removed.

Anyway, the receiver has worked perfectly ever since--never had a problem. Just a very weird thing. I always wonder what they billed the manufacturer for on that second repair, probably just labour/assembly issue.

So yeah this might not at all be your problem but if no HDMI devices work, this may not be far from the case. If it's just the HTPC, and other things work fine on the same input, that's a tough one. You've tried different cables too, I assume?

Looking through this thread, I don't see anywhere where you've tried a different HDMI card just for testing. That's the first thing I would have done.

Sent from my generic not my computer device.
Thanks for the replies guys!

To answer some questions, yes, I have tried different HDMI cables and different inputs. Unfortunately the problem persists, and the connection works perfectly between my PC and the TV when taking the receiver out of the equation. I have also tried changing resolutions and refresh rates.

Also, I'm not able to try a different "HDMI card" because this is a laptop, not a desktop PC. The video card is very expensive and I'd sooner buy a new receiver for a cheaper price than replace the card.

Currently, my I have left my PC plugged into the receiver for a couple of days, only turning off the receiver and the TV when I'm finished. When I come back and power those two back on, things work like normal. I'm not sure what's going on here, but I really hope to find some sort of solution...

Well, if the problem IS the laptops HDMI card, wishing for another solution wont do anything to fix it.

Do they make a USB to HDMI dongle you can try? You can always return it.

Although seemingly harsh at first, you are definitely right. I may try getting a USB to HDMI converter and try that out... I just hope there aren't any funny conversion issues that would interfere with the receiver accepting the signal like other converters.

Although if that works, I'm not sure where it brings me. HDMI issue or video card issue? I'll see how it works for a while and keep this thread updated.

Thanks for all of you guys' help and replies, I really do appreciate it
