Hi Milton;
Welcome to the forum. This is a topic of converstaion that's discussed quite a bit in the HD recording sections of these forums, and you may want to do a forum search in that group for plenty of revealing threads.
The short answer is that currently the only vaguely affordable recording option for DirecTV is a W-VHS machine which can be had used from anywhere between $1250-$2000 or more from various places such as Ebay or japanese import, and about $4k-$6k new. But this is an analog recording, and is perceptably different from broadcast quality. additonally the D9 tapes it uses are about $30 a pop or more. We're all waiting with baited breath for the first crop of DirecTV STB's with a firewire connection to enable perfect digital recording to the at least 3 new HD D-VHS recorders coming in the next few months. These will enable long HD recording times on relatively low cost D-VHS tapes and perfect playback qaulity ("perfect" as in identical to the original broadcast). If you had a Dish network subscription instead (or as well as) your DirecTV sub, there are ways of combining a few pieces of equipment to digitally record all the Dish network HD offerings, using the now defunct Panasonic PV-HD1000 D-VHS HD recorder.
