Hi all,


I recently acquired a screen, free with a used projector I purchased. It's a Draper Clarion fixed mount aluminum framed screen in great condition, except for a smudge on the screen which I'd like to clean. There's the dilemma... I checked the Draper site and it lists two likely materials in this frame (it's not AT material) - one is the M1300, which is washable, and the other is the M2500, which is not washable. Before I commit some cleansing sin, can anyone help me identify this material?


I checked all over this screen and frame, but I find nothing to indicate which material is in the frame. All it's got is the Draper Clarion sticker. The fabric doesn't appear glass beaded and I don't see any fabric/thread weave pattern in it. Up close, it sort of looks like very thin vinyl with a slightly pebbly (is that a word?) pearlish finish on it. Does that give anyone knowledgeable enough to help ID this stuff, or should I just try to order some samples for comparison?

I've got samples of both fabrics. Both are fairly thin vinyl. The M1300 is completely smooth and the M2500 looks like it has a slight texture to it, although it FEELS smooth. The M1300 is white while the M2500 looks ever so slightly darker. The M2500 also gets kind of reflective when angled in the light.


I could take some digital pics if no one else can offer a better explanation.

Dave, I went out and took another look at my material. I know this it tough to do "remotely", but at what level of inspection does the M1300 still look "perfectly smooth?" This material definitely has a slight (very slight), but observable, "bumpy" texture to it - but, this is only visible on pretty close-up inspection. It's also not really white, but is instead more of a pearl or whitish-silverish color.


James, thanks for the caution. I certainly don't want to screw up this screen. According to Draper, the M1300 is very washable, but the M2500 isn't. I sure has heck don't want to mess this up! I'll be cautious...

I would call Draper before cleaning your screen. From what I have seen any cleaning at all disturbs the coating on the screen. No matter if it is 1300 or 2500. I lightly wiped my Stewart 1.3 gain with water and a smidjen of dish soap and you can see the spot I wiped in the image. Be very careful and don't do anything if you don't have to. Those coatings are easy to disturb.

This definitely sounds like the M2500 material! I have seen the M1300 and it is pure white and completely smooth.

Thanks DMan, and the others before. That's exactly the help I needed. It sound, then, like this is the M2500 - that's good news in a sense, because it seems to be a popular choice. But, of course, the downside is that Draper says it's absolutely not washable.

The information you have received concerning the care and cleaning of screen materials is correct. Unfortunately, the only recommended cleaning procedure for M2500 is to use a clean, soft cloth or brush to dust the surface.

If you would like some sample materials of the M1300 and M2500, please let me know; I would be glad to send them out to you.

Check out the Stewart Forum at www.thebigpicturedvd.com, Don Stewart recently made a post concerning cleaning methods for Stewart screens. I believe he recommended Simple Green and *blotting* the screen dry, not wiping.
