So I got a mcintosh (200WPC) and need to get good set of speakers. I would prefer this to hold me over for several years to come. I will be listening to music and watching movies in a 60/40 ratio. Music i listen to is classical, orchestral, symphonic metal, jazz, pop (specifically Jpop) and techno. Basically music categorized by high complexity and many instruments. I have a budget of about $1000.00. I have a subwoofer so that is not needed.

Thoughts?

I don't know how this fits in with the other suggestion, but right now Music Direct has the Wharfedale Diamond 10.7 on sale for exactly $999/pr -

Stereophile Magazine thought very highly of them -

Available in Black, Cherry, and Rosewood.

Wharfedale - Diamond 10.7 -

The Rosewood is fantastic finish.

The Cherry is not remotely as bright or orange as photos typically make it out to be. It is a nice medium brown with a hint of red.

The Rosewood, are a bit darker with a bit more red, but excellent grain pattern and a very nice looking speaker.

How about the Philharmonitors from Philharmonic Audio? They're made by Dennis Murphy who played ( ?still plays) with the Washington ( D.C.) Philharmonic Orchestra........voiced by someone who knows how instruments should sound....and well within your budget; they're $850 shipped.........

In a bookshelf, though pushing your budget, the Wharfedale JADE 3 ($1499/pr) were highly rated by Stereophile Magazine -

Again, somewhat destroying your budget, but you will not find a better pair of speakers for the money than the FOCAL 836 for $1899/pr marked down from $3200/pr. Crystal clear speakers.

The Philharmonitors are on hold for now - due to death in the family,
and Alexxa Sound is shut down for now

Let's not discount the Martin Logan 35XT Bookshelf speakers. The new Motion series have generated some very positive feedback. I was very impressed for the money when I head the Martin Logan Motion 40 floor-standing speakers.

Though, even the Motion 35XT are stretching your budget -

$625 EACH = Martin Logan 35XT Black Cherry -

$599 EACH = Martin Logan 35XT Black -

Well worth a look and a listen.
