My future home theater room is 18' wide, 20' long and 10' high. The room has two windows but I'll will be adding heavy drapery to block all light.

I want the largest image possible while still retaining good quality.

I watch a lot of cable TV and some DVD movies.

I am thinking about rear mounting the projector (20' throw image - is that possible? with my budger US$2000)

I have a sony DVD Player - DVP-NS575P

What projector will best fit my need?

I am also looking at a Sony 57" WS510 RPTV but I notice that as I move to the right or left, the image becomes dull. This is also the case when I sit or stand. Is there any TV that will not give this problem without exceeding the above budget?

Wow, that is a tall order. Most projectors in that price range can't produce enough lumen's to really do a good job at that distance. If you mean you want to throw a 20' wide image, I don't think that is possible with any projector under 10k. Even trying to produce a 10' wide image from a 2k projector is nearly impossible.

My room is 12 x 25 and I am throwing a 92" (diag) image from 12' away with an Optoma H30 and I have good light control. After much discussion with others, including my screenmaker Carada, that was about the best choice for my room. My screen is 1.2 gain and the H30 is 800 lumens or so. My picture is exceptionally bright and clear.

So, if that kind of size works, then the H30 is excellent. I hear the new Panasonic AE700 is also very nice and it has a 2x zoom, so the image can be adjusted more to fit the room.

I was hoping that I can mount the projector on the rear wall and the projector will need to display an image on the opposite wall 20' away.

The image size I'm hoping to acheive is between 98"- 120"

I'm trying to avoid placing the project between the couch and the screen.

Ceiling mount between the couch and the screen is impossible as the ceiling was recently decorated.

Any help from the experts will be greatly appreciated.

If we assume that your lens will be 19' away from the front wall- here are some image size ranges for a few projectors at that throw distance:

*H30 in 4:3 mode- 134-163", probably won't work.

*same in 16:9 mode- 123-150", slightly better but probably still won't work.

*InFocus 4805, 16:9- about the same as the H30 in 16:9, it's probably a little brighter so may be more usable in that size.

*Panny AE700, 16:9- 94-187", phenomenal range. Better stay toward the lower end of that.

Suffice it to say if you must use your room the way you initially envision it- you need a long throw projector like the 700. There may be others out there that I am not aware of.

I am planning on taking down my H30 from the ceiling mount perhaps this weekend for some mount maintenance. Perhaps I'll try throwing up a 140" image just to see what I get. I'm currently projecting 82" diagonal 4:3 and ~70" diagonal 16:9. Like shock96- I got a lotta punch at that image size and I can view it from a 60 degree angle with no loss of brightness to address your other question. 1.0 gain screens lose pretty much nothing at extreme angles.

Cheers!

Thanks for the response. This is exactly what I wanted to find out.

So what do people with HT rooms 19' or larger do without having the projector and a bunch of cables on top a table between the couch and screen?

I guess buy the more expensive projector.

i use a speaker stand tha can go as high as 9ft and put it behind the couch. but i usually go between 7ft to 8ft. i modify the top part of the stand so that i can put my projector upside down. let me know if you want to see a picture. stand is about $40 and things needed for installing the projector on top of the stand $10. i like it a lot and i can move my projector anywhere in the house if needed.
