I have a pair of boxes I made when I was actively doing competition car audio a few years back. I just moved into a new place and set up my HT room, I am not satisfied with the output I am getting from my current sub which is a Klipsch RSW-12d. I want to take the two boxes I have and modify them to work nicely in the HT. They are currently tunned at 37hz if I remember right and their dimensions are:

width - 19.75"

Height - 24.5"

length - 27"

cutout diameter 14"

port

width - 7 7/8

length (left to right) 6 3/8

Depth - 16

The front of the box where the sub cutout is has a 1.5" front wall. all made from 3/4 MDF. Some internal bracing but not enough currently, might use treaded rod to brace the box so I do not lose internal space.

I do not have an amp or drivers currently so I need advice on what to buy. I considered using an ep2500 for the subs but I have no idea what sort of active crossover I would need. I obviously need a 15" driver.

My current equipment is an Onkyo sr805 receiver, all Klipsch reference speakers RF82 up front, RF 52 in the rear and an older model KLF-C7 center.

The room is about 13x18 when the blackout curtain is closed and if that is not closed the room is open to the rest of the basement.

I want a loud but deep sound from the subs, should be able to feel them strongly during good actions. The room is mostly all concrete and I still need to try to treat the walls somehow.

Here are some pictures so please give any advice that might help me. Thanks

back of the room curtains partially open to rest of room. They close all the way though and black everything out.

I know they are tuned wrong, I built them for the car, I want to cut the port out and replace it. The port is a square in the top of the box that is in the dead middle. I can cut it out and put a new larger of smaller or longer or shorter port in. I just want advice on what sort of port size and equipment I should get

You can't build, design, reuse or change a box without knowing what driver is going in it. The driver and the required tuning will determine the box. You should start out deciding what driver then look at your box options. If you want loud and deep and a 15" sub, those boxes may not be big enough anyway.

I am starting to get that feeling, actually I am starting to consider scrapping the boxes and maybe doing a single 18" RL-P from Soundsplinter in a 13-16 cubic foot box tuned to around 16hz or so. Thinking of trying to make it low and long similar to the metal bench my center sits on right now to maybe replace that bench. Not sure on the amp yet maybe the EP2500 or maybe just get a plate amp like the 1300 watt one from elemental designs. I have considered taking the boxes I have though, sealing them and using them with a RL-P15 each. The internal volume would be about 5 cf if I did that.

i like a couple sealed shivas for your application.

your room is pretty small, so a couple 12's and a good amp should be good enough if you are just looking for depth. 3 cubic footers stuffed with fiberglass...done!

build new enclosures. it's not that big of a deal.

your room is a little rough, so no need to get them "gem mint" perfect. build them out of plywood, maybe glue in some additional corner bracing, 2"x2" along the internal corners, then coat them in black truck bedliner.

get a good amp, ep2500/4000 and some sort of eq. mic220 on the cheap, dcx2496 or deq2496 for more involved builds/upgrades later.

Here is what I have worked up so far. I am thinking of going with the rl-p18 from sound splinter and powering it with a EP2500. I am not 100% sure, but I do not know that I will need a crossover because my onkyo receiver has a 80hz, 90, 110, 120 built in already I can activate to whichever I like the best. My box idea right now is this:

72" Wide

23" Tall

23" Deep

Made of 3/4" MDF with corner and cross bracing.

The port would be a slot port along the bottom that would be 21.5" wide on the inside (23" deep - 1.5" for MDF wall themselves) and 5.5" tall while being 59.89" deep. This will give me a tune of right around 16hz. Obviously the EP2500 will have more than enough power for this sub, but it allows me to build a second in the future if so desired.

The internal volume should be around 18 cubic feet after the port and sub.

If my Winisd is right, I should not have any port noise with around 50 ft/s peak at 14hz, I should be able to reach high spl and not bottom out. I have included the Winisd file as an attachment for anyone who cares to see the plan. This is not a final decision but a strong possibility. I do not know if I need a crossover besides my Onkyo because I would not have a subsonic filter to the best of my knowledge.
