We need a better TV for our vacation home. It's on the beach, so there are a LOT of windows in here. Do I go for the LCD with the matte screen or this LED with the matte screen? I assume the LCD is better for glare but don't LED's have a better picture? It is my impression that the LED is ACTUALLY 60 Hz and the rest is interpolated. Is that correct? So it comes down to an LED with 60 hz. or last years LCD with 120 Hz.


Help me decide! I want to get something here before the Olympics.

Here are what I think are the best deals on Amazon. If you have any other suggestions I'm all ears. It needs to be available on Amazon Prime. Thanks!

Those are both good choices.

Last year, I bought last year's 60HZ LCD Samung model D550 and the 60Hz was fine for me for typical video content in a daytime viewing setting, so I didn't buy the more expensive D630 model.

The EH5000 appears to a replacement for my D550 model but with LED backlighting instead of CCFL, so lower power - looks good.

Samsung LN40D630 40-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV (Black) [2011 MODEL] $549.00

The Samsung D630 is a great CCFL-LCD. It should have much better blacks than the Samsung EH5000 LED-LCD (this years Samsung LED/LCDs seem to have black levels that are about twice as bright as last year's D550 and D630, even the top on the line ES8000 and mid range EH6000) and has more extensive picture controls (CMS and 10-pt white balance).


So, I'd go with the D630 (2011 model). Don't be fooled by marketing campaigns designed to convince consumers that "LED" TVs are better than LCDs. In fact, they are just LCD TVs with LED backlighting instead of CCFL backlighting. Most LED-LCDs are edgelit and offer similar or worse PQ versus the best CCFL-LCDs of recent years (though this year's CCFL-LCDs are mostly entry-level sets only).
