Hello all I have been reading thru various dedicated home theater threads for a while now and I am thinking about taking the plunge. I have had a home theater in our family room for years and have been very happy with it. This year a number of things have changed in our life with the addition of my third daughter and my mother in law moving in. They are both wonderful additions to our home, but they present seriously obstacles to watching a movie. One of them is always taking a nap or in bed. What I am thinking about doing is converting part of my garage ,that is currently a woodworking shop, into a dedicated theater. I think I want to build a box within a box because noise is a major concern, I want to turn it up with out disturbing anyone. The usable space after construction would be a rectangle with one door in the long corner that is 17'-2x12'-10 with 7'-6 high ceilings. The measurements take into account a 2x6 insulated staggered stud wall built with a 2 air gap from the existing wall. One layer of rock on the exterior (?) two on the interior with green glue. Isolators and hat channel on the ceiling with a single layer of rock. The floor I would have to fur up as it slopes down an inch to the garage door. HVAC would either be from the ductwork that is currently in the ceiling of the garage for our master bedroom (potential interior noise issue) or from a thru the wall unit (potential neighbor noise issue). I am a contractor by trade so a majority of the work would be done by me. The plan is to plan well enough to build what I need (columns, stage any other wood work) while my shop is still a shop and then sell off my woodworking equipment to help pay for the project. I figure it will take about a year to complete given my time and noise constraints so I am hesitant to buy speakers, projector, and screen etc. now when I could better use the money for construction, but I don't know exactly what to build without having the equipment. I will use my Denon 2809 receiver and LG BluRay player from the family room everything else would be purchased either used or new specifically for this room. My questions are-What size screen can I use in a room that size and at what distance? My budget for the projector would be $2000 or less new or used. I would like to fit comfortable seating for 8 but it doesn't seem like I have enough space. I am not sure where to go from here. Thanks for any input you can give me.

I think you might be going overkill on your sound isolation, 2" air gap is unnecessary, you only need enough room to separate the two walls physically (1/4" would work). The outer layer of drywall on your box is probably not needed. your best bet there may be to stuff the wall with insulation.

I have no experience in these manners, I'm just relaying what I've read on the forum.
