Hello all,

I have a Sony STR-DN840 connected to a Samsung F8000 (60") and love the combination but I do have a nagging problem.  Right now, I have the HD set top box connected to the SAT/CATV input with the output running to HDMI 3 (ARC) on the TV.  When I'm watching cable TV, the audio plays through my floor speakers as expected and I can control the volume with the Samsung remote.  If I select Smart Hub with the remote then select the Netflix app or try stream from a website using the TV browser, I get no audio unless I turn off the Sony.  At that point I can restart the apps and play audio over the TV speakers.

I've seen a couple other posts in the Samsung F8000 thread from other folks that seem to be describing the same problem but not definitive resolution.  I've also seen posts from folks that say Netflix works fine for them.  So, if someone would please give me some ideas on what I might be doing wrong or what I might check in my setup to get this problem resolved I'd really appreciate it.

Once I get this fixed, I can try to figure out the whole Air Play thing...good times.

Sounds like you have a problem with the HDMI ARC settings in the TV and receiver.  Check to make sure it is enabled on both.  Most things require power cycle after changing those settings.  And some receivers only accept ARC if a specific source is selected like TV so check that.

Or do get a round the whole ARC issue, run an optical cable from your TV back to the receiver and use that audio for TV apps.

I've been checking the Sony manual and it appears that I need to select TV for input and then the front panel should show ARC, assuming that the TV is sending the audio back down the HDMI cable.  I guess that's the first thing I'll check when I get off work.  Looking at the Samsung manual I don't really see too much about enabling ARC.  I see there's a menu to select which speakers to use but that seems to be about it for enabling audio devices.

I do wonder if they Anynet + is complicating matters.  When I'm playing audio over the floor speakers and change the volume the Anynet logo is displayed showing the volume number as it changes.  If I can't get anything to work I may disable that functionality and retry everything.  Whatever the problem, I'd like to avoid using the optical cable out.  I'd like to keep things as clean as possible.

ARC indicator does not come on when I select TV as source so I'm at a loss here. I've changed speaker settings on the TV, disabled Anynet, even did a factory reset on the TV but no joy. Beginning to get annoyed.

Just got finished chatting with Samsung and they're recommending a different setup.  Basically, they're recommending that I disconnect the set top box from the receiver and connect it directly to the TV.  Then, to get audio to the receiver they recommend running a second cable from the ARC channel down to the receiver.  I'm at work right now so I can't try it out right away but I'm hoping this will work.  No real loss of function making these connections as I'm already using the TV remote to control the cable box but it does mean running another HDMI cable.  Does this sound right?

Unless you are experiencing HDMI handshake (audio/video) problems with the cable box connected to the AVR, there's no reason not to leave it connected to the AVR. The issue is with ARC and has nothing to do with the set top box. As already noted, to enable HDMI(ARC) on the TV, Anynet+ must be enabled and the audio set to "External speakers". HDMI-CEC (BraviaSync) must also be enabled on the AVR as well.

Hi mcoomer, thought the whole purpose is to get audio from TV to receiver. Now Samsung gave you two problems, no audio to receiver for TV apps and the set top box

I can play audio to the floor speakers when SAT/CATV input is selected but not when I try to stream video using the TV's Netflix or web browser apps.  So, I did a factory reset and I'm pretty certain that I enabled Anynet+ but I'll double check when I get home.  Not certain how to enable HDMI-CEC on the Sony but I'll look through the manual, find the setting, and enable it.

Anyway, yeah, I thought it sounded like a workaround and not a solution so I'm glad you folks agree.  I want the minimum number of cables running to/from the TV.  Right now that's a power cord, HDMI cable, and IR blaster to control the cable box.  Don't want any more than that.
