When I first got my HT1000 I was real pleased with how quiet it was. But now it seems louder and I'm trying to figure out if it really is or if I'm just being neurotic. I was hoping other owners could help me determine whether I should get a replacement from NEC.

I think the sound that's annoying me is from one of those little, high rpm fans (like a CPU fan). I've concluded that it's a fan and not the color wheel because it obviously gets faster/louder when switching from Eco to Standard mode.

So this is what I hear (left/right directions are from the bottom when ceiling mounted)

On the right side is a quiet intake fan low in pitch. From this side of the projector the little, noisy fan isn't as bad.

The annoying fan can be heard most from the heat vents on the left and front. To my ears, this noise overpowers the intake fan.

In "High Speed Fan Mode" the intake fan speeds up but the annoying fan doesn't. Although the overall volume is louder this mode might be preferable to me because the much less obnoxious intake fan masks the little fan.

In Standard light mode all fans speed up though, in a relative sense, the little fan isn't as noticable. When switching back to Eco, you can hear the fans spin down and the intake fan drops away to almost nothing and what's mostly left is that annoying one.

So is this what the rest of you hear? Do you have a fan that makes a higher pitch whirring noise that dominates the other larger sounding fan(s)? Or to put it another way, does it sound like you have a computer in the room?

Thanks for your help.

My HT1000 was quiet for the first 18 hours. Now it is noticeably louder. Like yours, it is quieter on the intake side. The outlet side is nearly as loud as my PC's power supply fan. It isn't very high-pitched though.

Funny, I think the color wheel is slightly louder now. I'm betting that if the fan is fixed, then I'll gripe about the color wheel. :)

I really wish NEC would use Panasonic Panaflo fans (very popular in the PC enthusiast world). When I took out the lamp for inspection, I noticed that the big fan that cools the lamp is of some unknown company that manufacturers the fan in Vietnam!

jeez.... it's amazing how that little fan can be so irritating to some users in the HT1000. I just got a HT1000 and boy, it is sure quiet compared to my NEC XG852! The XG852 has a bunch of fans, and it sure as heck sounds like there is a jet engine going in the room. The Seleco HT300s are more irritating than the Ht1000 with its high pitched whine, but still is a lot quieter than a CRT.

If you haven't already done so, vacuum the input and output grills to remove any dust that may be clogging the vents. A reduction in clearance will make the sound louder.
