I will be getting one of these, and I would like to know which one is the superior model and panel in terms of PQ and overall quality?

PQ might be a little better on the PX60U, but that's subject to debate so far. I have seen a lot of posts where people are not happy with the PQ on the new PX60U and i don't remember seeing such posts a year ago when the PX50 and PX500 models debuted. Sometimes these people have been able to get a good picture by tweaking the settings, while others have been unsuccessful. I keep seeing the word "Clayface" associated with the new PX60 several times now, where i'd only seen it associated with Samsung before. That scares me.

The PX500U has a lot more features and better sound than the PX60U, and is a much much nicer looking set. I would own an PX500U, but i would not own a PX60U cause it's just a little too ugly. I also suspect that build quality may be reduced on the PX60U as Panasonic has drastically cut prices on the new models.

Thanks a lot for the reply, it really helps "sway" me towards the 500U. The only dilema I am facing is trying to justify buying last years model for more money than the 06 model. In the end, PQ is extremely important to me as well as having many "tweak" options with the picture settings.

I paid a visit to Magnolia Hi-fi and they had the 60U right next to the 500U. The picture on both were very clear and sharp(after I changed the settings of course) and the feed was of discovery I believe in HD. The picture had an animal swimming in a lake surriounded by hills and trees. What I noticed on the 60U is that there seemed to be a greenish tint to the water, while on the 500U it was more of a red. I am not really sure which one was correct, or maybe both were wrong. Only a few of the TV's in the room showed the lake as being a grey color. Assuming that maybe both were wrong but are fixable, I would say that I would go witht he 500U because of the basically even PQ and the pleasing looks of it over the hideous 60U.

If anybody has either of these models and can lend some advice, it would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I have the 500U and my friend has the 60U. I have a comparison of the two here:

I you read it you'll note that I found the differences to be slight but gave the edge to the 60U (on picture, the 500U will have better sound if that matters to you). As for your tinted water, make sure both set have the Color Mgt. control turned off. This control overemphasis the greens by shifting part of the yellow spectrum to green. It looks very unnatural on some scenes and is totally unnecessary. Good luck with your decision. They're both excellent sets, you can't go wrong with either one.

I own the 500u as well and I am about to purchase a 37 or 42px60u for the bedroom so I have done a lot of comparisons lately it seems. I really enjoy my 500u for the little things like cable card, the sleek looking bezel that doesn't look like cheap plastic, the speakers, the on screen cable guide and the fact that to my eyes, it does look better. I know they changed the glass from last years' models to this years' models so that might have something to do with it. Mind you i'm not trying to convince myself it's better because I have it, as I do plan on buying either a 37 or 42px60u model really soon.

Both are really good sets that you are looking at, don't let the money do the talking, let your eyes. Sadly in store reference is not the best option.
I also have a 50PX500u and I really do like it. I was planning on a 60u but seeing them side by side in the store....the 500u was superior in both PQ and build. I did not like something about the PQ on the 60u. It was brighter but not better. Now, maybe at home the 60u might be better but I wasn't going to take the chance and the build just could not compare. Even the Pioneers can't compare to the build quality of the 500u's.

Just my opinion..... :)

EDIT: I am finding out new things all the time on it. Like, why can I change black level while playing DvD but not HD? So I set it to light for a while to evaluate
So basically what i'm getting is that I can't go wrong with either panel. With that said, the 500U looks so much better than the new model, and with the same quality in terms of picture and control, I believe I will go with the 500U

When using the built-in tuner the black level is locked on Light when viewing an HD channel and Dark when viewing SD. This is true regardless of where you have it set. You can confirm this by bringing up the picture menu while viewing an SD channel (using the built-in tuner). When using the component input it lets you select and remembers your choice. I don't use HDMI (seemed like more trouble than it was worth) so I don't know what happens there.

I have a comcast HD box, so I will not encounter this problem with the black level as I am not using the built in tuner, but a seperate one, correct?
I purchased the 500U in late January, 2006. Great plasma for the money. I'm glad I didn't wait for the 600U. However, the 2nd HDMI would have been nice. Frankly, I can't see much of a difference between HDMI and Component inputs anyway since both look fantastic! I tend to watch the cable card input more than the cable box since it seems to have the best picture. But any difference between the cable box and card are very very minor. Clay face issue worries me. Sound on the 500U is better compared to the 60U. Plus, I really wanted PIP. And yes, I like the look of the 500U and 600U over the 60U or 50U. The set you are looking at was likely manufactured in Mexico in 2006. 500U are difficult to find but I've heard Tweeter/Sound Advice was to get a shipment in either April or May. I purchased mine thru Panasonic Direct with employee pricing. I intially order a 500U last October but they sold out. I checked the website almost daily and they had some for sale in late January but only on the Club Panasonic portion of their website. I hesitated for 2 hours then ordered it. When Panasonic called several days later to comfirm my order the CSR told me he thought they were out but they were showing in their system again. If you have decided on the 500U, I would order it ASAP. Enjoy!

I don't consider it a problem since it adds a little more punch to the SD channels (mine is calibrated with the black level setting on light). If you input your STB through the component input you can definitely select either, I never tried the HDMI input. BTW, this works the same on the 50/500U series as on the 60/600U series.

Yeah, I confirmed it. I thought I had changed it. :D

EDIT: What do you prefer for DvD, light or dark?

I calibrated mine using the DVE DVD on "light" so that's where I leave it.

Interesting. I seem to like the DvD set to light also but I need to calibrate soon.
