My home was robbed last week so I'm replacing much of my electronics. I think I've decide on the LCD but I need help with the stereo. I did have an Onkyo HT in-a-box setup. I was not using the rear speakers because of the setup of the room. I would like to keep with the 3.0 system I was running. I currently have the sub off because of complaints from neighbors. My budget is $800-1000. The only things I have really looked at so far are the Klipsch F-30's and the Polk Monitor 70 Series II floor standing speakers.

Few facts about the room:
  • 22ft. by 12ft.
  • The LCD is over the fireplace
  • The speakers were on either side of the fireplace
  • The receiver and my HTPC are in the table under the window
  • The white doors aren't actually doors but just openings (right is a hallway and left is kitchen)
  • The door in the top left is a coat closet
  • The empty space on the right wall is where I crate my dogs

First thing I would upgrade is my security system.....

If you're running 3.0, I'd capitalize right now on the Polk Monitor 70 speakers. Find them in the "cherry" color for $300-$330, pick up the center channel directly from polk audio through their Ebay store for $70. That brings you to $400. Then pick up an Onkyo Receiver (can't really pick one at the moment not extremely current on them). Shouldn't need much over $300, but check out slickdeals.net for good deals on those. That will bring you to $700.

Whether you get polk or Klipsch, you'll be surprised at teh step up between this and the Onkyo HTIB. Only thing I want to ask is why no sub channel?

I did have a sub hooked up to the HTIB Onkyo system. I had the sub turned off though because of neighbor complaints. It sits next to the window and the sound goes straight through it. Why do you think the Polks over the Klipsch?

I would take Klipsch over Polk monitors any day of the week. The lower end Polks are horrendous. If it were me, at $700, I would get something like this Onkyo 616 for its pre-outs and get a couple of these active JBL LSR308s from Crutchfield which have a very good deal for those speakers. Together, that is just a bit over $700. Even though that is just a 2.0 system, I think it will sound better than any 5.1 setup for the same price. Those speakers should have good bass output to make up for your lack of subwoofer. Since those speakers are active, they won't tax your receiver at all, which will help it last longer.

You have people complaining about the Onkyo sub - and you are now looking

at tower speakers, that will give you more bass than the Onko subwoofer?

You may want to think about that

My dog is 100% deaf. Kinda scarey each time I wake her up cause she get startled.

I would at least attempt to listen to either the Klipsch's or Polks before purchase. I find the klipsch are head ache inducing to me just being too bright for my taste

On Polk's ebay store you can get a pair of Polk RTi8's which are on a higher level than the Monitors.

The Matching center would be the Polk CSi5 which they have instock as well

When we got robbed our roving biological security units were at a friend's house.

My "previous" canine security unit would chew anything in sight, including a few helpless couches, chair and many clothing items. Apparently she needed some Dr Phil time, as she had seperation anxiety...

Bradley, on the other hand, sleeps right by the door when I am not there and anyone even get close to the house, he lets the entire neighborhood know. One night, I couldn't figure out why he was so excited. The next day, I found a screen that had been cut away...
