***4/29 PM UPDATE***

Bought 2 Polk New Monitor 75Ts for $360. Now deciding on which Center speaker to buy.

Which should I choose: Polk C25 or a CS2? Or should I just buy whichever one is currently on sale?

***Original Post***

I just received $480 today for my birthday, and I did't expect to get anywhere near that much. So, I have decided to spend it all on speakers for my surround sound system:D

I am upgrading from a cheap HTiB (Sony STR-K790 http://www.docs.sony.com/release/HTDDW790.pdf ). A couple weeks ago I bought an Onkyo TX-NR515 receiver, and last night I ordered a Klipsch RW-12d subwoofer.

So, now all I need is a Center, Left & Right Fronts, and a pair of satellites. But I don't really know how I should spend my money.

I was thinking ~$300 for the L&R Fronts, ~$100 for the Center, and ~$100 for the pair of rear speakers. Does that sound about right? If not, what do you think is the best way to spend the $500 on the speakers I need.

Should I spend all the money on just the fronts and center, and just use 2 (or 4) of the satellites from my Sony STR-K790 until I can afford to spend more?

How do I ensure that I am pairing speakers together properly (Noob)?

I also would really appreciate your recommendations for speakers that are a good value for my price range.

Information about my situation:

- Room = 10' x 20' (TV is on the wide wall)

- I am only interested in getting the best possible performance for my money. I do not care at all what they look like, or if they are big and bulky. I don't want to spend any extra money on a speaker because it looks cool, or is compact. If they perform, I'll find a place for them in my room.

- Uses: 70% Videos, 20% Music, 10% Games

Parts I already own:

- Receiver = Onkyo TX-NR515

- Subwoofer = Klipsch RW-12d

Thanks in advance.

+1 on the polk monitors and ininity primus speakers. Also I'd like to add the Andrew Jones pioneers to that list.

Do you live close to a Fry's Electronics?

If so, you can get Infiinty P363 towers for $117 each.

If not look at the Polk 75T towers for $179 each at Newegg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882290272

and then add the C25 center for $150.

that's your $500 right there. you can add the surround speakers later. use your current sony speakers for now.
No. I do not live near a Fry's (Western New York).

I have been thinking about getting the Monitor 75s for $360 and either the BIC PL-26 or the Polk CS20. That C25 is sold out right now, but if it is better then I would be willing to wait and see if I can find it elsewhere.

How can I tell if these different speakers match each other?

Here are some speakers that I am trying to compare:

fwiw, another great bargin to look at imo would be the boston acoustics a360's(white with black grills) $400 free ship. at accessories4less and the a225 center (black)$150free ship. a little over budget but will be about the same on shipping or sales tax with other speaker purchases. and use your sats until you save for some better surrounds.

It's important that all the speakers in your front soundstage timbre match. The only way to guarantee that is (a) run three of the exact same speaker or (b) buy the matching center created by the manufacturer. The Polk Monitor II, Polk Monitor TSi, and the new Polk Monitor line at Newegg with the T and C designations all are similar enough that you can mix them. The BIC PL-26 would be a bad idea to match with the Polks.

Just ordered the monitor 75Ts!

As soon as I can find the C25 for ~$150, I think will buy it. Unless anyone else has another recommendation. I can get a CS2 for $115 from ebay http://compare.ebay.com/like/360643241993?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar . Would the CS2 be as good as the C25?

Any ideas for satellite speakers would be greatly appreciated. I will probably be buying them within a month or two, so I can take my time and find the right deal. Which speakers should I be keeping an eye out for?

Thanks again for all the responses.

It's less important to timbre match the satellites, but why not since you can? It will make a little difference in some types of recordings. Wait for the Polk Monitor bookshelves to go on special.

Is there any real reason to choose the C25 over the C2?

If they all timbre match the same, does any one sound truly better than another?

If I want the very best center channel I can get for

One more question:

Is there any reason that I shouldn't run the 75Ts (8 Ohm) with my Sony speakers (6 Ohm). Would mixing 6 and 8 Ohm speakers be dangerous to my receiver at all while I shop for a center and satellites?

no problem running 6 and 8 ohm speakers together. I'm currently running Energy RC-70 fronts which are 8 ohm with Jamo E680 towers as surrounds which are 6 ohm. not a problem at all.

yes, you can get the CS2 instead of the 25C, except the CS2 face is silver instead of black if that matters. if you never take off the grilles it probably doesn't matter.
