I do not currently have DVD-A in my system so I'm thinking I might wantto upgrade to a DVD-A player. But the thing is, I'm going to college in two years, at which time my HT gear will rest for a while. Should I wait till after college and just get a Pronto TSU2000 or hsould i get the DVD-A player? My only thing against the DVD-A Player is the fact that the DVD-A technology may become much better when it catches on more in the upcoming years and maybe then I will be willing to plop down $1-2k for a good DVD-A AND SACD player. What do you guys think, get the Pronto or the 5700?

Kyle:

Whether or not a DVD-A player is a good move at this point in time is highly debatable. Personally, I'd put off that purchase 'til later, when reasonably priced players that will play both DVD-A and SACD will be available. It shouldn't be long.

As the the remote: if you really need a remote, I'd suggest an alternative to the Pronto. Have you ever used a touch screen remote ? I find them to be not very user-friendly at all. The remote I'd recommend instead would be the HomeTheaterMaster MX-500 - a remote that was designed with input from a legion of remote freaks that pressured the company to modify design parameters ad infinitum to make a unit that would try valiantly to be "perfect". IMO, they succeeded brilliantly!

Lastly, I highly recommend taking as much of your gear as possible with you to college. Electronic products don't take kindly to being stored and not used for extended periods. Loudspeakers are seldom affected much, but other products hold up best when they're in fairly constant use.

Kyle,

Whether or not a high-resolution player is appropriate probably should depend on whether many of your favorite titles are available in that format. I think you should investigate both SACD and DVD-A.

An advantage (?) of a Pronto is that programming it can be a lot of fun in itself. Background music while you're engrossed in that doesn't need to be quite so high quality :)

[added later: if you like to relax and listen to music, then the player would be appropriate. If you prefer to be involved in doing something, then the Pronto would be indicsted.]

Whether or not you can take your HT setup depends on how big it is. Most colleges and universities require you to live on campus for at least the first year. Dorm rooms are usually not very large and you have to share it with at least one other person. ...And then there's the problem of what might happen during a party. Once you live off campus or in a fraternity, however, more options become available.

I have to disagree with woodman abut speaker storage. It depends on what they're made of and where they're stored. Paper-based cones will have problems if stored in a damp or otherwise uncontrolled environment.

I hope these considerations help a little.

As someone who has both a Pronto and a DVD-A (& SACD) player I'd recommend the Pronto. I love my Pronto and my system wouldn't work without it (I actually have 2 Prontos). If you get a DVD-A you'll need a Outlaw ICBM for bass management and then if you also want SACD you'll need a 5.1 switch, software is expensive and very limited, and the players will improve allot in the next few years.
