Help me with quick question(s)?

Hi, I'm looking at getting a PS3 40GB to use as a media hub, gaming, and blu-ray player. I'll be using a MacBook pro with the PS3, but first;

1. I'll be connecting the PS3 with a DVi adapter to my Samsung DLP HLN507W-1 that is native 720P with a forudja(sp?) scaller.

Any problems with this?

Does this 40GB PS3 do everything the other PS3's do besides the smaller HDD?

How hard is it to upgrade to a larger HDD? I see theat people are doing this up to 500GB.

I plan on running some HD(TV) content through my MB Pro to the PS3 out to my Samsung display.

Do you see any other problems?

I'm looking at a unit now. Thanks!

If you're referring to the "current" 40GB, 80GB, and 160GB models, then no, there is no difference in features between these models. The only real difference is the hard drive size. Also keep in mind, these "current" models do not have PS2 backwards compatibility (although rumor has it it's just a firmware update away
). However, all PS3s have PS1 backwards compatibility.

Sony made it ridiculously easy to change/upgrade hard drives. I'm not just saying that either. They made it "Apple" easy, if that's makes sense. You'll be amazed.

Is this considered "current"? Will this do what I'm looking for?

I'm not sure if this is against the TOS or not. I'll remove the link in 25-30 minutes just to be safe.

I highly recommend spending the extra money to get a brand new PS3 with Sony's one year manufacturer's warranty. Also, with a device this expensive I just think it's better to buy new.

Here's a chart explaining the differences:

Although the chart doesn't say, the 80GB and 160GB are believed to have the 65nm graphics (RSX) chip. I recommend getting the new 80GB for this possibility alone.

Thanks for your post and help.

The last part you said that the 80GB and 160GB are believed to have the 65nm TSX chip. But in that chart it shows they all have that. Am I missing something?

Also, can anyone tell me why the 40GB is the same price of the 80GB? That chart shows a 95nm2 along with a 65nm for the 40GB. What does that mean?

Thanks everyone!

There's the main processor, the Cell, and then there's the graphics chip, the RSX. The Cell has been reduced from 90nm to 65nm since the 40GB was introduced. However, the RSX has always been 90nm, until recently.

As far as pricing goes, the 40GB is being discontinued in favor of the newest 80GB model. Some places have the 40GB at a reduced price, but not at all places. I believe the 40GB was supposed to be reduced to $359.99, but I'm not sure if all stores are going with that price.
Right on.

Can you tell me what you ment by that? Is it somehow better than the other 65nm?

Does removing and replacing the PS3 HDD void the waranty? Or not really?

changing the hard rive doesnt void the warrantly. sony explains how to switch the drive in the instruction manual.
Thanks Funky.

So is one 65nm better than another 65nm?

Thanks!
Are the new PS3's next generation PS3 hardware with better performance?

Cell, RSX?
i've heard the newest versions of the ps3's run a little cooler & quieter, but they have less functionability (e.g. no backwards compatibility for ps2 games, no SACD playback, less usb ports, no memory card readers).

Sorry for the late response. Get the latest 80GB PS3. If you look on the box, near the serial number, make sure it has CECHK01. This model has both the 65nm Cell and 65nm RSX.
I opened up my CECHL01 80gb and can confirm it does have the new 65nm RSX chip, along with redesigned heatsinks. I took some pictures of the motherboard, heatsinks, and RSX chip, but don't know how to post them on here. If anyone wants to see them or post them for me you can message me.
