Help: Music only system on the cheap (college student)

948 Views 5 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  mazersteven
Let me start off with saying that I have been reading up on these boards for about a year or so, and it is the most informative audio board I have seen.

Here is my conundrum: I am moving into a house on June 3rd (college house) and am looking for a set of speakers to compliment some old DIY speakers my dad made. Their main use will be in the basement, so they need to be relatively rugged, and have "decent" sound but mostly they must be cheap because they will likely get beat up. I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions of speakers that may fit the bill, or if everyone thinks this should be a DIY project and I should just get some dayton loudspeaker drivers off of partsexpress and put something together myself. The main purpose will be to play music loudly enough to fill the basement for some late night entertainment (p.s. I'm not getting a sub out of fear of a noise violation).

Also, I have a Panasonic SA-XR55 receiver (which was recommended on these boards, and I have been very happy with it).

Thanks in advance for your help

Get an older pair of Klipsch Heresy's. Great speaker for what you are doing. They are pretty smooth, very efficient and have great midbass punch without too much extension much below 40 hz. They are a classic college speaker and hold their value incredibly well. They'll also fill a large space without any problem.
roadkil34, I always thought the best move was to look for some big old used speakers that graduating seniors did not want to haul away with them. You can probably pick some up for a couple of beers if your timing is right.

Where are you going to school?

Guys getting married are also a good source of large, ugly speakers.

Thinking of how we abused our speakers in college (physical abuse, not just what we played) I would only consider used or DIY speakers.

How much do you want to spend, and where are you located?
