Wondering if any current model 7.1 channel receivers can do 5.1.4.
Yes I know technically that is 9 channels but I have seen a few of the 9 channel receivers be able to get to 11 by using zone 2 preamps. Are there 7.1 models that do the same thing? I have a budget of around $700 or less so it puts me out of range of most 9.1 receivers.

Denon X4200 (expandable to 9 channels with a 2 channel external amp) or the Yamaha Aventage 2050 with 9 internal amps already built in. Both will require more money though. Probably $200 to $300 depending on closeout deals new but now's the time to get them.

There are currently only three 7CH models that can expand to 5.1.4 using a 2CH external amp:

2014 Denon X4100W
2015 Denon X4200W
2015 Marantz SR6010

Call AVS for pricing on the 2015 models if interested.

Are there any 2016 models?

now I'm really torn. I want a 2016 model and had my eye on the Pioneer vsc-lx301 and was going to pair it with the andrew jones elite speakers.
However with only 5.1.2 I'd have my rear atmos speakers dormant :(

Options to consider - I'd appreciate some opinions

1. Stay with 5.1.2 and either live with dead speakers or pick different rears without atmos.

2. Pick one of the 3 7.1 recievers listed and add external amp.
Does anyone stand above the rest in terms of features/ price?

3. Wait and pray that a 2016 model will be launched and affordable - probably won't score a deal until at least 6 months after launch

4. Pony up big bucks for a 9.1 receiver.
Don't see that many 2016 model 9.1s
