HELP! My TV (or STB) may have died, I don't know which.

I bought my tv (Sony KV-30HS420) 31 days ago from HHgregg (they have only a 10 day return policy). And the tuner (RCA ATSC11) over ebay used

Well here's the deal. When I output the TV Image via DVI-HDMI cable to my tv I get a blank screen. When I switch the switch on the back of the STB between 480i/480p/720p/1080i this is what happens:

1080i - nothing

720p - nothing

480p - lines/flashes

480i - lines/flashes but only on the left side of the screen (50% of the total screen, complete left side, right side is black).

IT use to do this:

720p/1080i - Displays Fine but slightly off center to the right by about 5-10%

480p - Display fine, centered.

480i - image displays only half on the left side of screen. Right side is blank.

When Using component cables everything seems to display the way it should and everything is centered properly. When Using Yellow video 480i displays fine. I haven't tested the S-Video.

Now here is the thing I am curious about. I had two of these OTA STBs and they both did the same thing as above (about the HD displaying off center and 480i being goofy thru the DVI-HDMI connection).

Since they both did the same thing I returned one of them and figured that it either is A) a bug in the unit itself, B) my tv's HDMI input needs tweeking in the service menu (never attempted to do anything), C) Both STBs were bad.

Regarding the possiblity of it being the TV why would the HDMI image be off center when recieving an 1080i or 720p signal?

Another possiblity is the cable. Perhaps it is faulty? If it is the STB then why does Component output work fine?

How do I test to see if the STB is bad or if the TV is bad? Since the STB was used and obviously has no warrenty, has anyone had any experience with SONY tech support? Do they offer in home diagnostics? Or do I have to ship the thing out at my expense (remember this thing weights 150 lbs.) to some "place" and be without my tv for weeks on end. Everything else works fine on the tv regarding movies and video games and non-hdmi television.

I would think the problem to be the STB but since both of the ones I had (same exact model) did the same thing I figured it was too much of a coincidence to be that both were bad. NOTE: I only bought 1 STB on ebay but the seller shipped me two for some reason. I took advantage of this to test both units before deciding which to keep. I was honest and sent back the other unit I didn't pay for.

Anyhelp with ideas on how to trouble shot this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried powering the tv on first, then the stb and vice versa. I seem to recall some discussions about handshaking issues associated with HDCP (protocol used with DVI & HDMI) which were resolved by using a specific power up sequence.

The digital output module of the STB may be out, not effecting the component output. BTW, most consider component HD to be equivalent to DVI/HDMI HD in quality.
I don't get it. After writing this and about 30 minutes after experinecing this problem I decide to go and test it once more. All I did is turn on the STB and the TV and everything is working the way it originally did. What is going on?

Also, I'm aware of some handshake problems with HDMI. I tried previously turning off both the tv and stb and turning on the stb first then trying to see if it would be different turning on the TV first. Previously, this didn't help.

But now I turn on the tv and everything is back to normal so to speak? This is really odd. It also wasn't the channel as I have the STB ouputing to both the TV and VCR. The VCR had a signal but the tv didn't. Now they both work. Does anyone know what is going on?

Thanks for the qucik reply. My second post addressed the handshaking.

Regarding component, I would use that, however both component jacks are used on my televison with an xbox and dvd player. The HDMI made more sense to me than buying a 2 component cables to switch thru my receiver.

Also, I wanted the best connection possible too. Thanks though.
