Help: NEC PG-9100 (plus) Questions?

349 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Jesse S
Going to look at an NEC PG-9100 in a few hours and need to know a few things from the experts out here. First post but have been reading a lot. Helped me make my decision of the NEC PG over Sony 1272Q.

1 - How do i check the tube for burn-in

2 - How do i check the tube hours or chassis if even possible

3 - Seller told me that I need an NEC Scan Converter IDC-3000 to properly run the crt. What would this mean. Was some internal board removed thus needing the IDC unit or does he simply not know what he is talking about and using it to connect maybe an s-video then going to the CRT with a VGA. Of course also using it as a doubler. What should I be looking fo to know I do not need the IDC unit.

4- What cost is fair. The PG-9100 (crt 3000 hrs. ???), IDC-3000, Mount. E-bay does not show any past or present for this model but the PG-9200 went for around $1800 and there is one now for a little over $2000.

Thanks for the help.

1: Look into the lenses with a flashlight and look for discoloration, such as a darker area. Some wear is common, but you should NOT see any discernable writing, logos, or a windows desktop image with the set off.

2: In the set-up menu is an hour meter. However this can be reset, and may be useless.

3: Yes, and no. A line doubler is the minimum I'd use it with, but a DVDO Iscan is a better unit for the money, and best would be a HTPC. Video only looks bad on such a high resolution unit. The IDC-3000 works, but it's really not that good. You may not have a quad decoder card in the PJ, it is an option. This means you need to use RGBHV inputs, as you really should.

4: Hard to say.... depends entirely on the tube condition. Mounts go for $100 to $250, IDC-3000? Not sure. The IDC-2000 would be a better unit.

Make sure you get the set up remote! You CAN use a Pronto, but the original remote makes it simpler.

Thanks Marc,

In regards to question 3. So if i try and hook my labtop to the crt to play a DVD there will not be a VGA connection. I'm building a HTPC so can not hook up to test but wondering why he would of said it was originally processed through an external splitter and thus does not have an internal card to process the signal. I am going to see it in an hour to see what connections are there but never heard this before.
All you need is a breakout cable. This has a vga connector for the pc end and it has 5 bnc connectors on the other end for your pj's RGBHV input. Easy and can be had for as little as $10. You may want to spend more later but a cheap one will be fine for now.
Yes, a VGA to BNC RGBHV cable is all you need.

Thanks for all the replies. So there is no chance its missing a video card. Sounded like it may be an option on the 9PG's and without it you can not project an image from a source as a DVD player. Simple cable hopefully will work, thanks.

Finally found a similar discussion. So is the following true:

"The other thing to find out is whether they come with a video decoder board or not (These convert S-Video or Composite video). Most people drive the RGBHV input (equivalent to VGA from a computer), so the decoder board is not really necessary except for low quality usage. The connectors are always present for S-Video and Composite, but that does not mean the decoder board is there. Most NEC PG projectors were sold without them."

Does anyone know if the Xtra series always come with Video and S-Video board?
muka-

your unit may not have the board required to use the s-video/bnc (composite) inputs. My 6PG has those inputs but you can't use them as the board required inside is missing (I opted to remove it to save money).

But who wants to use those nasty inputs anyway?
